Never one to stop modding my car, while I was doing my original air cleaner mod, I came across this really nice custom air cleaner at a Tiger meet. The top is cnc'd from a piece of 3/8" aluminum and replaces a particular Summit air cleaner top. It is similar in shape to the stock Tiger one but is a not as long. The owner of the car agreed to contact the fellow that made his and supply me with one. This is a very nicely made piece and can be painted with many colour variations...
I'll post pics of the one on his car... a blank one...and a colour scheme that I 'photo-shopped' to see a different look...

Yup; a couple of customers spotted this and have asked me to look into it for them. Any contact & pricing info would be appreciated. thx

Nice

I have the Summit air cleaner. It looks like you have a K N Filter on it is it part

Manufacturer Part Number: E-2859 ???? I was getting ready to buy on but was concerned about pulling the round filter into the slightly smaller oval..

I have thought of doing something with the several pound air cleaner, not that I am weight concerned, it just seems too heavy and plain. Another crafty guy was selling a less intricate one on E pay for 400US in England.

Very nice machine work, good option other than the purchase of a AC stock one on EPay for unobtainium prices.

Any other designs? I am from the day of non CNC machines

Maybe a US/Union Jack Flag with a Tiger script ...

Warren, the K&N E-2859 is a replacement for the stock 1 1/2" high air cleaner element and will not fit this one...but... you could do the 'hot rodder's ' trick of cutting out a piece and rtv-ing it together to get the right size.. the K&N's are very flexible

This air cleaner top is made to fit a Summit Racing SUM-G285 air cleaner that comes with a 2" element . K&N also makes a 2" in this size which is # E-3515

It doesn't show in the pic very well but all the raised portions are polished... Beautiful !

You'll notice that the 'blank' is a little different than the original. I had them 'adjust' the program to have the logo cut deeper and the filter relief shallower which I think looks even better !

The original unit is fitted under a LAT hood and may not fit other applications.

I will be using a custom flat base ( only works for D.P. carbs ) to make it fit my setup

I have contacted the owner/designer and he is willing to have more made if there is interest... pm me for more info... Randy, I have your addy and will send you details

K N

Good advice.. and Thanks for the heads up.. I have called the K N distrubutor and did not get any where.

I have been sewing and contact cementing my small Honda no longer available air filter together for years, just getting lazy or overcome with projects lately.
You should see how the guys on Honda305.com take the paper from a big oval air cleaner out to rebuild the old metal cage stock unobtainum filters, a hobby in itself.
My of my best pals is a graphic designer, been after him for a silkscreening project or both flags and a Tiger fender script. Fun stuff keep those creative jucies flowing ,,,

AIR CLEANER

My red Tiger has been on jack stands for now 21 years. As a winter (multiyear) project I moved it from the shed to the garage to begin the wellness project. From the past CAT tech tips notes, a replacement air filter element for the original AC element was a 1966 Pontiac element that you formed into a oval. From what I see on this post, are there more up to date alternatives?

Sunbeam Specialties has both regular and K&N filters that they form to fit the (original) air cleaners.

I have 2 'formed' paper elements here... might have got one from S.S. They definitely show signs of being 'persuaded' into the oval shape.

The K&N 'stock Tiger' filter is very flexible... so much so, it could easily be used in a round housing of the right diameter.

you just kind of lay it around the housing and it fits

Here is all the K&N's that are the same Diameter as the stock filter and what they're rated to flow
...
E-2859: approx. (1.5in), 381CFM @ 1.5” of water ( stock replacement )

E-3710: approx. (2.0in), 508CFM @ 1.5” of water

E-3717: approx. (2.5in), 638CFM @ 1.5” of water

E-3720: approx. (2.75in),699CFM @ 1.5” of water

E-3723: approx. (3in), 763CFM @ 1.5” of water

Of course, not all will fit without serious mods but I was surprised by the CFM numbers quoted !
That's why I'm now using a 2" !

CNC Air Cleaner

I just got this picture from my CNC guy. What do you guys think???
I have not fit it to the car yet but it should work fine. It uses a stock K&N E3515 filter

SWEEEEET!!

So, you made it to fit the same filter as my CNC one... The lip beyond looks a little wider though so I'm curious if it's a little bigger... mine 15" x 8.25"

It appears that the bottom is flat ? which is going to be a problem with some carbs ( especially an Edelbrock ) as the linkage sticks up higher than the mounting base...:(
I was able to use a flat base on my double pumper as the 8.25" measurement allowed it to drop down between the float adjusters.
Curious as to the cost.. it cost me $125 / $60 for my top/bottom pieces...
Nice work!!

New! CNC machined Aluminium Air Cleaner Housing

Just a quick note! for those interested, in 10-12 days, I should have my new, CNC machined “all aluminum air filter housing”.
This housing will look identical to the original “AC” housing, with the exception of having the “AC” data removed. This housing will be machined out of billet 6061-T6 material, and the bottom will be CNC milled 7075 –T6, this air filter housing will be using the K&N ( stock) E-2859 filter.
Attached is a picture of an “original” steel filter housing, so just imagine it as aluminum instead of steel. This new filter housing, it will look the same, but have a .100 lip to hold the K&N filter, it will be machined to be light in weight, but yet not compromising the strength of the housing. I am picking up the final tomorrow I post more pictures when I get it home.... and I might have some production numbers.

How about a machined/knurled hold down bolt? Save me turning one myself.
