Alternator that looks like a Generator

Does anyone know who makes the alternator that looks like a stock generator for a Tiger?

Thanks, My problem is that most shops I have used just repair the generator and don't rebuild it. If I could get a good rebuild or new generator I might stay with it. I'm getting tired of fixing it every year.

I had the same problem with the stock starter every couple of years I had to replace it. The I put in a smaller high torque unit in that allows a larger gap between the exaust pipe and the problem appears to have gone away.

BTDT...gave up on the 40's technology and installed a alt. Tiger is MUCH happier with healthy voltage and current. Can drive at night in the rain with high beams on, heater blowing, fuel still pumping and STILL honk the horns!

I do not disagree with any of the recommendations to upgrade to an alternator and keeping the stock look of a generator certainly does have some appeal.

That said, and based on your observation above, you might look for a rebuilt unit from a New Holland tractor dealer. There is where I got mine about 10 years ago. They bought out Ford's tractor business several decades ago. Ford used the same generator as in our Tigers into the 1970's on their tractors. Might be worth a shot if there is a dealer in your area.

If you do take yours in for the required core, remember that they sell the generator unit itself, absent the pulley. The dealer I went to was even nice enough to take my old pulley off and install it on the new rebuilt generator for me for free. I think I paid about $100 for the generator back then.

Who knows if you can even still get one these days and if so what is the price. If you do decide to look into this and it still is a viable source, please let the rest of us know.:)

The tractor generators also come in a 45 - 55 Amp version. Same mountings etc. etc. The brush sizing is not the standard F 33 though. . . . . . .

Looking forward to an after action report on the installation and performance. Photo would be good also so we can see how close to stock it all looks.

It's stock! well sort of...

Ordered one as well from Jeggs. Went with the 82101-2 which has a charge light circuit. Already running a Denso with a Jaeger amp gauge from the PO that is flawless (excepting the charge light) installed by Meaco Performance. Wish we had a Fla location! I continue to change things on a perfectly running Tiger! go figure

Leave the Tiger alone! Buy an old Fiat or Triumph to putter on forever . . . .

I have been told that my stock AMP gauge will work with the Alternator but I have also read it will need to be changed. Does anyone know who sells a alternator AMP gauge that looks stock.

Amps are amps it doesn't matter what makes them so your Amp meter will work just fine if it works right now. You would be much better off replacing the amp meter with a volt meter. There are a couple of sources for look alike
volt meters...

Smiths do a volt meter in the Cobra range which has the same bezel as the Tigers gauges. Just fitted one, had to paint the needle red though.

The stock amp gauge is 30/30...maybe they are referring to the 50/50 amp gauge that CAT sells.

It's In! thats what she said

Well, the PowerGen is installed and charging! Fairly smooth install but unlike Bernie I did not have the original to fall back on for parts and comparison. Although the Denso worked fine the PG much more looks the part! Will continue to try to post pics VaCat33 for you to compare. The amp gauge works but the gen light had been unwired by PO and truthfully I have to study some more to attach the wires. The lamp terminal on the PowerGen is negative, the small brown wire wi yellow tracer (off gen light) is positive; I'm nervous connecting those TOGETHER...will report!

Purists, avert your eyes!!

PowerGen installed and working! The small brown wi yellow tracer goes to the Lamp terminal on unit. The gen light twinkles on untill the car cranks and promptly goes off. Once I can find Tiger lower bracket I can rotate the gen much closer to the block and away from the firewall, overall very pleased, be sure to order 82101-2 if you wish to continue the gen light function.
