another air cleaner housing thread

Bruce that came out great. How do I buy one........oh wait I have 28 reproduction air cleaners sitting in my living room. Lee

another one...

Pic of the housing I posted about earlier...

Looks about as low profile as one could get. Not sure it fit all the way down to the carb base, but... low profile anyway. I kinda like it. I like a lot of things about the picture (recent find) because it filled in some more history.

Can anyone ID this housing?

PS: Bet I could ID the car where that San Mateo housing came from. Waiting for the new owner to chime in here... Black MKIA had been parked outside in lot for years... Met him at SS, so I know he's been well meaning. Hope another local project is coming along.

If I am not mistaken those type of air filters were available at most auto parts stores--I know I had a few on various cars in the 70's and 80's.

We are now 15-20 sales of our first 30 air cleaners. Thanks and we hope to be in the black sometime in this millennium. We will serve our club members first then ebay folks. Very positive response from our buyers. See those of you going to Monterey soon. We will have a painted sample and a few to sell to STOA members. We like them too after all they did TAC my car. Lee

Those have the thinnest most worthless foam in them. I think it would be just marginally better then a velocity stack with a window mesh style screen to keep debris out. I have burnt up that style foam on a motorcycle with just a couple backfires. Put that foam that close to the venturi's and make sure your insurance bill is paid. Yes I know I have never had my car backfire thru the carburetor, but I do not have dual points any more either that go out of adjustment.

Air Cleaner

Derek, Bruce, Warren,

I have one of those low profile air cleaners on my Tiger (sorry Warren). It's called a Fly Eye and was made by Baldwin Motion. There are several on ebay right now.

Looks Great

Bet it could be a be a great pasta strainer too:D

Your car would never back fire I know..

Have you done the math on the flow for your 331? Do you really need a max flow type? I have looked closely at the foam the Edelbrock triangle style they are so thin and ineffective looking with huge pores. That one looks much better and it's $150 on eBay. I have had to build foam air cleaners as old vintage bikes paper ones sell for crazy money as NOS items.

Does it make sense to add filter area possibly in the bottom or top of a stock housing? It would look kinda cool...

Sales have been great mostly to club members first as planned. We need more air cleaners! Waiting list now for the next run. Thank you CAT club for helping us. Looking forward to showing off to STOA members tomorrow afternoon in Monterey. Lee

I will pick up a "new" air cleaner in Monterey and display it on my car in the corral so those that have not seen it can take a look. I should bring my silver paint to dress it up. Have a good trip and see you Friday.

paint

do you use rust-oleum silver or the hammered gray-- the gray looks a little to dark- thanks

Looks Just Like The Original

I finally compared the quality of the one that Warren/Lee/and Bruce are selling with the original that I have. The stampings are superb and the quality matches that of the original in every way.

Regards,

Thanks Robert, sales have been great with every comment positive so far. We sold 30 in two weeks and have a waiting list with another 20 when we can get more stampings. This is making the project positive for us and the goal of getting these out to people is also being accomplished. Enjoy your air cleaner and thanks for the comments. Lee

Just wanted to say, I got my air cleaner the other day, I am very impressed with the quality and how close it is to the original. Being in the tool and die industry for most of my life, both on the inspection side and the manufacturing end, I know this wasn't an easy tool to reverse engineer. They even got the small stamped numbers on the upper lid side lip. I also painted mine hammer toned silver, I don't know how close it is to the original color, but it looks good. My original, both upper and lower were chromed well before I took ownership, so I can't compare the color. Just wanted to say thanks to the guys that made this happen.

I just wanted to comment and hidden down in this post is a good place to vent. We were able to offer the club a double discount on the first lot of air cleaners which were gobbled up quickly. I think CAT even got a few new members too.

Now the State of California gets $40 of every California sale we make. We fronted the design, molds, production, shipping and now warehousing and the cost of our reasonable priced item goes up by almost 10% for the State's cut. So if you need one have it shipped to your friend in Arizona to save some money. Sorry the new quotes will have to include sales tax. Not my choice. Lee

Hello

I wanted to say thank to Warren,Lee and Bruce for such a perfect work; i ve received mine today, the picture speak for herself.

Color seems perfect to me, is it really necessary to paint it?

Cheers

Paul
