Another Project Up for Grabs

Sorry no opinion on cost but..

Look out on this matching numbers thing! It simply does not apply to Tigers.

The 260 block has casting numbers. The valve covers an engine number assigned by Rootes. There is no VIN stamped to the body. VIN plate is riveted to the cowl. All the "correct" numbers are portable.

None of these prove a Tiger over a clone. Look out when: "You are bidding on a rare true not a clone sunbeam tiger with its original matching numbers 260 motor. all original drivetrain and parts." True Tigers are not as rare as hen's teeth yet. And "true" Tigers do not all have stock drivetrain and parts.

Verify the history of the car. Or move on to a TAC'd car.

Car looks like a big resto job.. there is quite a bit of rust where you can see.. and they haven't shown the real problem areas :

Cruciform under the car
Rear Spring hangers
Floors
Inner wheel arch at the join of the front sills.

The other thing is they show the VIN tag off the car.. why is it off the car? Also, look at the amount of corrosion on the VIN .. was the car sitting outside with the bonnet up? you would want to have a very good inspection of this car for 2 reasons.

1. What extent has the rust taken hold.
2. is it what it claims to be.

As for the resto cost Randy... I would guess that if the underside is as bad as the outside if they took it to you and asked for it back "as new" it would make a comfortable retirement for you and the Mrs.

These car are very rare and rocketing in price the last of the affordable shelby"s

when done these cars range from $40K to $60$ if you can find them.

At least $120k and that might be on the low side...Right now it looks like junk

Gotta Like

A good bashing. Gee where do you start when shopping Ebay. How about the sellers feedback of 26 with a pretty heavy negative. Holy cow are you guys blind he says right in his add the floors are fine, why should he bother snapping a clear pic? :D
Good call on the tag, man it was hit with a wire wheel with reckless abandon probably tearing it off, wonder why the other hole is cropped out?

I'll take a couple of air cleaners at 700 each, if only he had one to offer with the car I'd break out my rusty I mean trusty bidding index finger.

Last weeks mean green rust machine was presented much better and did not meet reserve at 12,300 and it had lots of good bits actually in the pics.

Gotta love the period correct Grant steering wheel and the way they filled those pesky trim and Tiger script holes, who needs a Tiger badge on the car anyway.

To say here is a car that needs everything is speaking lightly, if you need a career change have no life no wife or no hobbies it may be a good deal.

Restoring this car is the fast lane to upside down land, no not Aussie land. I can't count that high right now, I just got back from a 3 beer CAT meeting, sorry Randy.

Better put fresh batteries in that calculator and remove the rosy specs . . . . .I've got some road frontage commercial property you could dive into also.

What kind of wheels are those on the rear of the car? My car came with a set, and I haven't seen another on a Tiger.

On my first Tiger in the early 80's it had 3 sets of slot mags--wish I would have kept a pair for later in life. They still look good on these cars. (but so do flares). haha

What about a "Beater"

Im no expert, but Im sure the cost will be more than what it will be worth when finished. But what if your not interested in showroom quality? How about just a rat rod, that your not afraid some dumb ass will scratch, or dent. Every time you take your perfect concourse Tiger out, you run the risk of very expensive damage, but if your car is already beat up, you can beat the crap out of it everyday without worry. (much)

Yup, you can hook up the heart beat paddles and bondo for $$$$$. BUT, for the same amount of money, I'm certain you could afford a really good Miata with all the gas & maintenance for years . . . . . . .

I hate Bondo, leads much nicer.

Let me tell you a story. A good friend of mine is into 55 Nomads. The one he owns is a restored, low mileage, matching numbers, show quality car. Ron can't (wont) drive it anywhere. He doesnt want to increase the mileage, put wear on the tires or any other part on his car. Also the danger of someone damageing it on the street or in a parking lot. One day a 55 Nomad, in about the same condition as this Tiger came up for sale, all of Ron's club buddies felt the car was a total waste. Ron bought it anyway, all his buddies laughed and ridiculed him for making such a buy. After about 6 months of welding patches and many pounds of Bondo, the Nomad was back on the road. Now Ron drives that 55 everyday, doesnt care about wear or wreaks and his buddies whine because they cant drive thier show cars, but Ron drives his Bondo Bucket everyday. Not every Tiger has to be perfect, not everyone can afford profesional restoration. just my 2 cents.

I thrash the crap out of my show (multiple wins to include 1st place at TE/AE United XXIX) car. Don't think twice about it.

With all due respect there are show cars and show cars. I dont think we would be seeing Jim sliding his MKI around corners or dropping burnouts on his stock setup (though with the skinny whitewalls would be easy)

We have nice well presented cars.. but they are not concourse.. or true "show" cars... even if they attend shows . if you know what i mean.... that doesn't make me any less angry if i get any stone chips or minor issues on mine either.. and am sure you are the same way.

grabs

lead is fine if you don't leave the rootes seams as they are. the lead needs removed and seams need to be welded solid or lead will crack. this is an ongoing problem with the original lead if left in when doing a restoration. we have one car that we left the lead in and it has cracks near the trunk hinges. I have seen several cars with cracks in that area and also in the seams near the windshield.

On a Show Altar ??

Well, since ole' # 78 has gone thru it's 4th unbending & de-rusting with fresh colour, am I supposed to be gentle now ? NOT gonna happen !!:D

There is a lady in Ann Arbor who owns a real Shelby Cobra 289 and 427. I've seen her drive the 289 on a semi regular basis. The first time I saw the car I assumed it was a kit/whatever. I was surprised to find out it was a real Cobra. Around 99% of the Cobras at shows are recreations. We talked and she said she was not worried about driving it in traffic because if anything happened to it, the car would get repaired.
