Appraisal Service

I used Classic Auto Appraiser in 1995. The appraisers name was Jeff Hyman. I am in Orange County California. He provided a 16 page bound booklet with a half dozen photos. I was very satisfied with his service. Unfortunately his phone number is not on the booklet so I do not have it.

Methinks that entire program would be very subjective (for money)???

Appraiser

Several years ago I used a guy in SF named Stephen Cramm, was very knowledgeable and provided a good report. That was before the 2007 fire so I don't have the contact info. I should have looked for him and had him go appraise B9471929 before I bought it... It would have been money well spent, and I wouldn't have bought the car.

Classic Auto Appraiser

I also used Classic Auto Appraiser. He came out and took quite a few photos of the car, including ones to show all the LAT options. The appraisal was quite a few pages with detailed information. I thought the appraised amount was about right and there was no argument when I used it as the basis for the stated value for my insurance. The attached JPG file gives Jeff's contact info.

Reasons for

Most insurers ask for an appraisal but only if you are exceeding their benchmarks for a vehicle. I can see the possible need for an pre purchase if you are not able to see the car personally. I worked for Farmers for 22 years and had easy button when it came to values as the company required a appraisal from a "qualified source," They would also take a club member etc. Farmers owns JC Taylor. Tigers have been all over the map price wise lately. The best insurance is to have fire sprinklers in your garage.

Have lots of pictures of you car stored off site, remember parts not attached to your car are not covered, "some have small 1500.00 limits" and the parts are very most likely specifically excluded on your homeowners policy.

I hate to say it but lots of ins and outs that vary state to state read both your classic car and homeowners policy big print giveth and small print taketh away.

I know I have strayed a little OT but after a discussion with 2 fellow members one "CNC" claim not covered burnt garage with toasted kitty parts and a "no way you are kidding aren't you," from another Cali. member.

we have stated high values on five sunbeams that are insured thru hagerty. we added another car in august that is in the process of being restored ( presently a bare shell in body shop) and we have a stated value on the body shell. our agent takes photos of the cars and sends them on and asks for a stated value based on several things. we don't have to use somebody else to come up with a value. warren also mentioned the fact that parts are not covered under your home owners policy. we checked on that a few years back and he's right about that. here in ohio hagerty agents can add a rider to cover our spare parts in the shop. we provided photos of the shop showing all the cabinets, bins ,etc which contain NOS and repair parts. we have coverage of 20K with no deductible. cost per year is 60.00.

appraisals

For Tigers that are just drivers and those who choose not go for a professional appraisal, NADA classic car lists values. I wasn't so much worried about a garage fire, but aunt Matilda making an ill timed left turn in front of me. Recently 6 cars were going home from cruise night when the driver in the oncoming lane missed his cup holder, dropped his drink and crossed the center lane wiping out 3 classic 50 s cars. One 57 Chevy just out of three year restoration was totally wiped out. The owner had not updated his car's value on his stated value insurance after the restoration. Liability insurance carrier said car was only worth $5,000 as per his stated value insurance. Got to be lawsuit time !

Wipe Out

"One 57 Chevy just out of three year restoration was totally wiped out."

This is something a Pro appraiser might help with. He could see the car after the wreck, the receipts and pictures after restoration. Provide a believable number? When another has liability, the coverage limits of your insurance do not apply. If he (driving his 57) had been at fault? stated value with his insurance would apply. Arghh! Keep those numbers up to date. A fender bender would have been paid at stated value and a transfer of title to the insurance Co.

Before going to the trouble of a lawsuit it can be effective to file a complaint with the Insurance Commissioner of your state.

PS A few of the Surfaris went to Glendora High School in '64. One had a Galaxie 406. Wonder where it is now?

Whoa,

Dealt with him in the 90's--wasn't happy.

Wow some story you told me on the phone. You are too kind, me I'd say probably wouldn't pee on him if he was on fire.

Real Estate appraisers, Yacht surveyors in California have some professional org. and or state lic. to certify or otherwise regulate and control them. Car appraisers I don't think so.

65 Beam ,The things I also have seen in the biz is they exclude business pursuits when talking parts personal lines insurance and "garage keepers liability" a commercial insurance term.

You can't sue Flo or the Gecko for making Errors and Omissions while reading your policy for you and responding to your questions. Agents are worthwhile as they can see the wiggle room that insurers have to resist paying.

The subjective nature of the appraisal the relative lack of comps and the wild sales results do not help us.

I have suggested to clients to watch the market save all ads that can be comps. in print form and on ebay which is hard now as you can't copy their photos.

Any R,W,R,R car may have been a salvage loss at some time but now it is much harder to avoid the Salvage title branding when moving state to state or when buying back from a insurer or wreck yard. I wonder how many classic cars would be salvage title if state DMV's had the same standard they do now.

Rick, I am sorry I do not have a good option for you and the slight right turn to your thread.

warren,
i'm sure that the shop would have to assume some liability for the body while in their shop but the facts are that it's insured. as far as my parts, I have a full inventory plus photos. the best part is that my agent is also a tiger owner so I trust him when it comes to my cars. I've seen what they do to get cars repaired after a crash. maybe you need to get a feel for hagerty. the roll back service they offer is also worth the premium. I've seen it work in the middle of no where on a S. Dakota interstate at night when a tiger blew the engine. I've also had some cars set thru a flood and they got restored and they're still in the garage.

Ins

Thread seems to have drifted off topic, however I would have to say with regards to insurance, having personal experience due to a Tiger and 73 Cadillac Fleetwood burning down in my garage along with my house in the 2007 Witch Creek fire, that Hagerty is absolutely wonderful. Paid stated value with no problem.
About a month before the fire in 2007, my insurance on the 73 Cadillac (with 70K miles and looked like a brand new car) was due for renewal, and I'd had a stated value of $5,000 for years. Hagery enclosed a little note saying that their research showed that the Cadillac was worth more like $7,500, and for an extra couple dollars per year, I could raise the stated value. I did - and then a month later they had to pay me the $7,500! Thanks Hagerty!
