I have used sea foam penetrating fluid but I spray it into a small aluminum container and then dip an acid brush in the fluid then hold the brush to the bolt , this really allows the fluid to penetrate, and gets it where you really need it I only use the red tube to get to difficult places. I much prefer KroilA few notes, now that I've had some time to think:
That metallic pinging you hear is the fan hitting the steering rack. I haven't visually confirmed, but more than likely the motor mounts are toast. Will put in a call to SS today to see what they've got. Garbage reproduction motor mounts seems to be a favorite talking point around here. My question is: Does anyone have precision drawings or measurements to compare and/or modify the reproduction bits against?
I've cleaned the fuel system from the pump to the carb, but nothing's coming out of the tank. Given the state of the carb, it's safe to assume the fuel tanks are worse. I'll pull those out, inspect, and decide on a course of action. I've had good luck with the POR-15 kit and motorcycle tanks. It's a messy job I'm not looking forward to.
I've zero intentions of putting this car on the road with the amount of rust pouring out of the sills every time I close the door, but it would be cool to do a lap around the airport before fall when I begin the Great Disassembly. Lots of good tips here in this thread, things I hadn't done but wished I had during my Porsche restos.
I've gone around the car with my favorite lubricants, LPS #2 and #3. Felt great to get the trunk release and hinges, bonnet release, door latches, and fuel filler cap operating nice and smoothly. Next week, I think I'll get it back up on jack stands and hit the suspension with Kroil which has never let me down in freeing any stuck fastener.
I'll continue to update this thread as I go. Thanks again for all your help and collective wisdom!
Rob, wow... congratulations.... clearly more ambitious and more capable than me (low bar). Its great to hear it!A few notes, now that I've had some time to think:

The fuel cross over pipe between the two tanks in the rear valance will be full of flaking paint from the tanks and itself.. the fuel line takeoff is probably completely blocked.I've cleaned the fuel system from the pump to the carb, but nothing's coming out of the tank. The fuel line coming out the center of the cross over pipe is likely plugged. Rootes painted the insides of the tanks and it can come off in flakes or even large pieces. You can clean the tanks with diluted muriatic acid and then neutralize with water. I do not recommend sloshing compounds to coat the inside as most of these seem to be affected adversely by ethanol...A few notes, now that I've had some time to think:

Alcohol is not a good automotive lubricant. Since you're going to remove the tanks and you might change the connectors hoses does anyone know if the rubber aftermarket fuel pipe connectors being sold now fit any better than the ones being sold a few years ago. Those seemed to be a smaller inside diameter than originals. Even a coating of grease on the pipes didn't help much so Doug used the old connectors. As for favourite lubricants I've found the Hendricks gin, Goose Island IPA and Asahi dry are all good. But that more helps me than the car
