Bonnet Latch Repair

66 Mk1a with broken hood latch. PO welded it on the backside rather than use locking nut. I was hoping to be able to clean the threads with a die and find replacement nut. May be easier to replace if that is feasable. Advice?? I'm a proud newbie.

I'll get a pic uploaded tomorrow. It's the cone-shaped striker (and spring) that bolts to the back end of the hood via a small bracket, and mates with the latch at the top of the firewall to lock the hood down. It is attached to the bracket with a locking nut on the backside. That is where everything is messed up. It was welded to the bracket by the PO, but the weld broke. I could re-weld it, but I'd prefer a cleaner solution. To keep it original I would have to clean the threads up & find a suitable nut. Otherwise I have to find a replacement piece. Didn't see one @ SS or CS or otherwise, but I'm sure something would fit.

Hi Utah66, you should try Smitty in San Diego, 619-233-7937.
He could probably sell you the whole thing, they aren't that rare, I see them on ebay all the time.
That nut is pretty strange so you won't have any luck at a hardware store.
By the way, what kind of parents name their son 'Utah66' anyway?

Here's a pic of the part, and some extras of the awesome weld job FWIW. I will try Smitty's, thanks.

Yeah, part of the problem is the odd bolt & screw sizes. BSF or BSP or Whitworth, or whatever.... Where can we source such things outside the Sunbeam circles - there must be folks who still manufacture them.

Watch out, I'm pretty sensitive about my name! So either my parents were huge Ute fans or I live in Utah & have a '66 Tiger! BTW, my name is Bryson. I am a huge Utah Jazz fan, but I grew up watching the Lakers...

I'm pretty new to this forum, so if my sig is lame, bear with me.

Hi Bryson, it looks like you have all the parts, there isn't a backside nut, I had the impression that you were missing the front nut with the round boss that keeps the spring centered but that's still there.
It does look like the welding job screwed up the threads, you could probably just replace the threaded post piece and be ok.
If you can't find one let me know, I may have an extra, send me a pm if you need it.

I talked with Smitty. I asked him about the "striker". He said, oh, yeah, around here we call that a penis. If that is the case, mine is circumcised.

You got Smitty to answer the phone ? !!!! I usually have to load up the personal artillery and invade his "hood".
