Braille Institute Los Angeles.
Saturday August 6th TT Editor Mike Michels and I competed in the "Braille" again TSD rallye!
Again only 2 Sunbeams (My Navigator loved the name and enjoyed telling everyone she was getting "sun beams in a Sunbeam") Lots of interesting automobiles showed up as you can see in the pictures. Dave Kunz (KABC News) brought that open topped Fiat he was testing. At nearly 7 feet? tall he fit even when the top was closed. I missed it but the 7 Eyewitness News (LA) had something on the Rallye Saturday night.
The Rally was city streets, some Freeway and a great drive around the Palos Verdes Peninsula before heading into Torrance and the Toyota Motors Museum. Yes Mike M. had arranged for that and was car number 1 and first to start the Rallye. That #1 stuck with him as he finished first overall and and first in the "Large Print students" Class with Navigator Angel Solares.
I was paired up this year with 17 year old Noralys who is a graduate of the Institute but had participated the last two years as a Student. She has retained limited sight and and could read the large print instructions. She announced up front that she did not expect to win but just wanted to have fun. We actually did both by winning the "Alumni" Class and were about 5th overall.
Over 60 volunteer drivers participated and all enjoyed the surprise end point of the Rallye with lunch, awards and touring the Toyota Museum. The Students and Alumni navigators were provided gloves to allow touching the exhibits.
The Institute will do it again next year. Always early August and I will post B R 2012 to the Forum Calendar when the date is announced. Maybe we can get a half dozen or more!!??
Thanks to MM for the photo of Noralys with her Trophy.
