Choke Tube Question

I just secured an original choke tube with the insulation.
Question: Is the insulation material fibreglass or the dreaded asbestos? If its asbestos, I'll want to be very careful with it.
 
The originals are asbestos, if it was the "nos" one on eBay I was wondering what the sellers responsibility is for passing that informstion on.

The old brake pads also have asbestos and its illegal to sell them in many places.

They make some Mustang stuff that is fiberglass. The Asbestos stuff gets thrown in trash all the time by homeowners. Contractors and other pros must dispose of properly. Too bad it's not useful like old antifreeze is for killing ratsBng
 
It wasn't NOS but it looks like a real original. I don't really want to take a chance with asbestos so I think I'll put it in a zip lock and store it carefully.
Safer to go with fibreglass.
 
If you are in doubt wet it when you have to handle it.. The issue is breathing the fibres
 
Exposure

Like any other HazMat mitigation hype, the true exposure saturation and duration are the real factors. Most of us will be 125 years old before enough lead/paint/asbestos products reach an effective mass. And even then, it might cause a rash. Too much ice cream will nail you quicker.

100% true. I'd use it. Its not like you are insulating your ceiling with asbestos with no respirator.
 
I wanted that piece because mine is tore up and I'm tired of the flakes tickling my nose. But I missed the end of the auction. Ill buy if you want to avoid the danger. PM me. I may take a minute to respond as I'm going through some chemo. But I will get back to you ASAP.

I'm sure you won't handle it more then twice. It is hardy a laughing matter. I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV, as they used to say. The fibers attach and don't leave.

Spray it with a clear fixative if you have to use it.

Nope, I only look 123. Married the wild Italian and raised blondes . . .:O
 
My Dad was a carpenter after the war, worked with fibro, a major sheeting material in aussieland. Died at 63. Father in law built his own house using fibro on walls and roof. Died at 94.
So it will get you at any age.
 
Having asbestos around is like poking a tiger with a stick.
It may just sit there or it may 'have you'.

I'd rather put the stick down and walk away.

Asbestos left alone is no danger. It's when you start messing about with it that the fun starts.
