Clutch Slave Cylinder Problems

Does a 289 engined car have different mounting arrangements for the clutch slave cylinder to the 260?

I ask because there seems to have been some fairly crude modifications made to my car to enable the slave cylinder to fit.

More importantly, following a re-seal of the slave cylinder, the piston now shoots out of the end of the cylinder when I depress the clutch. Getting the correct travel/distance between slave cylinder and clutch operating arm will mean making up a new and (in my view) excessively long push rod.

Surely that can't be correct?

In case it's relevant, my engine is a C5AE 6015 with a date code of 6C29. The car has the stock 'box fitted.

Thanks

Just wild guesses on my part.

Is by chance your 289 a six bolt bell housing block? If so, the original slave cylinder mounting bracket will not fit properly. If you have a six bolt block, maybe someone tried to make a 260 five bolt block bracket work?

Also, is it possible the little angle bracket fulcrum for the clutch arm inside the bellhousing has broken? If so, the arm could ride on the back of the bell housing and still work after a fashion, but the distance it needs to move in order to function is thrown way off. The clutch arm would possibly have to move further to disengage the clutch, I think. That could cause the clutch rod to come out more than intended, etc.

Again just some wild guesses on my part from afar.:)

A C5 CASTING NUMBER IS A 6 BOLT 289 BLOCK. YOU NEED A TIGER II SLAVE CYLINDER BRACKET. CAT WAREHOUSE USED TO HAVE A FABRICATED BRACKET, OR SS ALSO HAS THEM LISTED.
IF YOU ARE A GOOD WELDER YOU CAN CUT AND MODIFY YOUR MK I BRACKET AND REWELD IT FOR PROPER STRAIGHT SHOT TO THE THROWOUT ARM. THE BRACKET IS CAST STEEL NOT CAST IRON SO IT'S EASIER TO WELD.

It ain't ever easy, but

See the other input comments I agree with. First: is your bell housing a modified 6-bolt aluminum. or some after-market combo? These things will determine very quickly if the SS bracket will work for you. Even then, the bracket brace will need a spacer for the tranny hole bolt. I can send photos of our version to your e-mail for ref. We need better knowledge of what you actually have before any good advice can follow . . . . . .

Thanks for the replies. :)

I'll take a look at the bell housing to determine what I've got. I'll also check to see what bracket I've got.

However I've an uncomfortable feeling that there is no such bracket: The top hole on the cylinder is bolted directly to the engine back plate and I know for a fact that the bottom hole is fixed to the backplate/bell housing using a short bit of bar about 1.5 inches long with a hole drilled at each end.

The car is in my workshop so I won't be able to confirm until at least tomorrow.

Thanks again for the help.

Sounds like you really need the stuff to get things correct. Keep us in the loop. I keep all that stuff on the shelf here just in case . . . . . . .

I am sorry to show my ignorance, but how do I tell the difference between the stock 6 bolt & an after market bell housing?

I have determined that there is no bracket though: the top hole of the slave cylinder is bolted directly to the engine back plate & the bottom one, like I said, via a short piece of home made steel bar.

I'm not really sure how the whole set up ever worked....

From what you described so far, I doubt the critter ever functioned worth a darn! Anyway, here's a photo of a converted 6 bolt with the extra bolt holes for the narrow case tranny. Also a pic of the correct (my version) slave mount. I think from the collective knowledge in this crowd, you can get this done right.

Ok, I've taken some photos to try & show what I've got. Whilst looking at the bell housing I remembered that the person I bought the car from told me it had a scatter shield fitted. I take it that is why my bell housing looks nothing like yours One of Five? Will this affect what slave bracket I can fit?

Apologies for the oily, down at heel appearance of my car; it's a fixer upper! And yes, it shows every sign of having been painted banana yellow at some time in it's chequered life

I left the bolts in the mounting holes to make it clearer where they were.

Reeeeeeach !!

OK, now the pictures show the issue. The slave is sitting too far away with the Mr Goldberg bracket set up. Send me an E-mail and I'll return some pics with dimensions for you to modify what's there. A few washers (spacers) and longer bolts should patch it up:).
