It was a great weekend of racing down in Coronado, I'll let Buck fill in everyone on the details but I wanted to post some pictures I took.

Saturday at the Races NAS North Island

Friend and X Fearless Leader (past CAT President) Larry Young came down from Bakersfield and we drove down to Coronado in (Bonnie's) Black Tiger. for Saturday only.

The Car Corral was chock full of great cars but only 3 Tigers Saturday. Red.. Eric Coiner. Black .. Mueller. Green .. Jim Massman.

CAT's Racing? There was only the #74 SCF Tiger. John Morton driving of course. Tom Sakai's engine builder did not get his motor back to him in time to race the familiar yellow Tiger so Tom brought out his 64 Falcon A/S to compete and it ran very well. No Alpines this year.

Morton had 3rd best time in morning practice so started third behind a tiny Ginetta and in contrast, whale like Corvette. I could not see the action in the first turn but both the "G" car and Vette dropped a handful of spots with John Morton leading the #153 GT350 around for a few laps. The Vette never challanged but the "G" car started picking off positions and 3 or four seconds a lap.

The Ginetta won by a literal mile and The Tiger had some distance on the third place GT350 at the end.

Tom Sakai started midfield and moved up as the race went on even passing the Vette that qualified 2nd I think. Not sure of his finish position.

Starting positions for Sundays race were established but I was not there. :( Someone else help out with the story/results please.

Well, to pick up the story from Rick, the 74 SCF Tiger has never run this well during our ten years in its life. The Tiger was strong out of the trailer and encountered almost no problems over the three days. Those of you who witnessed our dramas at Monterey would never believe the same car could have such a lack of angst the very next race.

After Saturday's race some of John's fans stopped by and chatted for a half hour. Those ladies attracted even more attention. It was a very interesting time to hang around the Tiger pits. (see pictures) (BTW, these shots would have more "impact" full sized instead of thumbnails - can someone tell me how to post that way?)

It's hard to say why our lap times dropped, but they dropped a ton. John believes the track was a little quicker this year but he turned in a lap nearly a second and a half quicker than our previous best.

On Sunday the Tiger was on the front row, gridded second. John managed a great start and the very fast Ginetta let the Tiger take the lead before the first turn. The announcers got pretty excited about that but after a lap the Ginetta found a place to pass and was off. It ended up lapping about 2/3 of the grid. It was several seconds a lap quicker than any other car.

The Tiger's engine ran strong and its stock brakes managed to last fine through both races. On Sunday, one Cobra got past the Tiger mid race but then several laps later John started gaining. John made a last lap charge but could not quite regain second place.

It was a great Tiger weekend. And a great close to the season.

P.S. In the last photo, they are looking at the new, revised version of "Stainless Steel Carrot" which obviously features pictures of John but also has a picture of both of these ladies as well as the SCF Tiger.

I notice that the girls have a logo on the T-shirt.. i have no idea or knowledge what the company or product would be.. must be something to do with pet food?... :D

anyway.. i note that Mr Morton has said logo on his overalls.. seems like a useful sponsor!

Michael,

If you ever decide to broaden your "knowledge", you might find that August, 2004, to be an interesting place to start your research.

Buck, seems you are implying this bunny thing is some sort of publication? :p where would one find such a car orientated magazine? I seem to recall that name "playboy" being associated with a Tiger owner n the 60's.. think the owner and car may have been posted several hundreds of times across many forums etc...

Ona more serious note... great results for the SCF car.. you are doing the marque proud! It seems an odd class you were racing in there.. i saw escorts, 914's and the ginetta in there.. seems a bit of a mixed class.

Strange bed fellows

It is a stretch to include a 1600 Ginetta made (to race) after 1965 in a Class/Group of over 2.5 L production cars through 1965.

At Coronado this has happened before. See the video link to the 2009 Speed Festival: http://catmbr.org/VB_forum/showthread.php?t=1663

The Ginettas' eye view of shooting fish in a barrel.

I had seen that video back in 2010.. the ginettas are amazing handling cars (shows its not all about power, light weight makes cornering and braking a big advatage) They had a can-am race at the Australian F1 GP back in 2000 IIRC, there were the M8's Shadow etc.. and a coupld of GT40's.. and there was a ginetta.. 1600 with a roof.. man you should have seen it under brakes and through the esses onto the main straight.. it would just haul past the cars.. that was until the straight came.

On the upside.. i guess at least the ginettas have a rootes connection, the G15's were imp engined and the G21 had the holbay twin DCOE 1725 and OD gearbox from the rapier H120/Hunter GLS.. ive always fancied a G21.. and if you could get rid of all the exposed screw heads and seams.. would make a very cool GT.

Michael, thanks for finding the video and posting the link.

This video starts about halfway through the race.

The first time John passes the camera, he's in second place, about 20 seconds behind the yellow Ginetta. Then the next time he comes around, the blue #9 Cobra has taken second, dropping John to 3rd where he ultimately finished.
