Disappearing act ??

What black car? I missed a Colorado car that got gobbled up in seconds because I contacted the owner a few minutes after it posted and it was sold. There are some fast people on this site. Lee

This one is back on ebay maybe the black one will reappear. http://www.ebay.com/itm/281462076172?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&fromMakeTrack=true

I seem to remember a yellow Tiger that disappeared in similar fashion a month or two ago.;) I no sooner had my wife looking at the ebay pictures then poof!
Wah-happin???

Seems like by the time it's listed on ebay or craigslist, it's almost already sold already! If only I'd had such luck when I sold my Alpine...

Cheers, -Kevin

Apparently it was approved and posted in 'Cars for sale' in error as the poster 'Bruce' is a member of this site but not 'CAT' ... :(

I got dinged for posting in the "wanted" parts because I'm not a CAT member. I live PA and would never reap the benefits really. How much is yearly membership?

The cost of CAT membership is $35 per year. You can get more information by going to http://www.catmbr.org/member1.htm.

In addition to being able to post in the Marketplace area of the Forum, your CAT membership allows you to buy from the CAT parts department http://www.catmbr.org/Parts1.htm as well as gets you the bi-monthly Tiger Tales newsletter.

Your membership also helps support this Forum.

Broken record...

sigh... grumpy tone ...

The lack of direct FOR SALE postings to these forums is asinine and contributes nothing except the appearance* of internal collusion.

The fact that EBay, CL, BAT listings and others may be posted is also incongruent... it makes zero sense.

Spam Concerns? give me a break... one must register and log in to post. Any spam may be removed / IP blocked by a moderator.

Membership Benefit? 99.99% of folks coming here know what they're here for. I'd far rather see an enthusiast owned non-CAT car, that could be brought INTO the Club, then to actively prohibit the post and increase the likelihood that the car remain non-club. Again, if an issue with a 'consistent flipper' or similar emerges, you deal with that. And to think a member's car would then be competing against a non-members, well, yes...it would. Just like parts do...here and on ebay. I posit a car listed here has a greater chance to sell at a price amenable to the folks on here, then one posted to a wider audience anyway.

Club battle? Obviously, many of you have been with vehicle for decades and know backgrounds on cars that I do not. In the case where a club-offending person wished to post a car here, I say..."why not get that chump out of the car and get someone less averse in?"

Creating trail / history of questionable cars? Well, you take the good with the bad. If a car has fewer questions, why is it less interesting?

Just don't see the issue... create some FS posting rules and monitor them.

*appearance: this is not an accusation, but its the appearance that doesn't fly...conflict of interest...

Example rules:
- Please limit your goods to Sunbeam Tiger related goods.
- If this is your business, consider an advertiser account to allow more than X posts.
- If this limit is 1 post per month, year, w/e, so be it.
- Moderator maintains the right to remove posts not meeting rules, etc, etc...

there are still <1000 registered people on this tiny, nice, well organized, well membered (sic), well administered, but sometimes silly ruled site... active membership? far lower. I don't see these issues at far larger auto forums.

Post em, all of them, I'd like to see them...

DD, dues paying... and will continue; this forum and the CAT knowledge is worth far more, not to mention the newsletter and parts access. Wish I was closer to meetings, it'll happen... sometime. I can take the backlash, go ahead, there are a few things with every org / family / etc that need attention... I'm not shy. And this FS post barrier is an antiquated position in my heartfelt opinion. (back to my Corp Social Responsibility training, heh...)

Derek, and Norm we are working on guidelines and with Mike's guidance and leadership skills required changes to by laws and as I would like written guidelines for marketplace and a more democratic forum.

To address some of the concerns in this thread. eBay listing's end early cause guys like Bruce aka Cobrakidz take my advice and pull the trigger on a close deal. Craigslist it's the early birds and just location location location. CAT marketplace ads can be submitted for approval and by members only. The ad in question was titled Forum member and not CAT member. When I have seen these in the past, I have checked with Rick and he reported that Bonnie had not updated the status of the poster.
I am guessing the same could have happened with the black car.

The rules posted are:
"Ads may be placed by members of CAT only and are subject to approval,"

This is the big print that you can see. What it really means is your garage sale items, your hobby garage part cobbled together item as long as it is not deemed to be advertising and a commercial enterprise. There should be a footer section of rules. I have a unique perspective as having been recently been grouped into the same professional seller class. I am a limited partner in AC filter housing sales, but feel no different than the other marketplace hobby funding project guys.

There is a no advertising rule loosely applied and carried over from pre forum days when the club was loosing money from the printing costs for ads from vendors like Sunbeam Specialties et al. My information here comes from conversations with other directors and officers. There could be other reasons to which I have not been made aware.

What has developed is the tag line "Not affiliated," and a drag and drop of your pals or your own Craigslist or even your own eBay auction. In addition cars for sale are dropped in General Tiger discussion further circumventing the rule.

Personally I enjoy it when Mr. Miller and his registry in training and and auction copy police correct the inaccuracies of sellers.

What you really get with membership is what our Tiger Tales editor Dave HolyCat listed previously, and I could not agree more or have said it better.

Sure on the East Coast you may never attend an auto X, or a West coast event. But you may buy our parts, like our news letter, read the shop notes and not stumble thru the "not written in American English," red shop manual. Or use the forum as you have to bring back the stress involved in buying a Tiger which is somewhat different than other breeds of played with toy cars. Your choices of parts are the forums our pro and hobby vendors and eBay, and yes there are guys that gin up parts wanted then magically a eBay ad appears

This is a volunteer org. run by a few guys it's not perfect but we are growing and other forums are shrinking and seeing attrition to Facebook.
We have a great guy for a president now who I believe is active in seeking ways to involve out of area members, and cater to them as you have some very good points.

As explained to me we are a non profit and can't have a big bank balance. With auto X and other expenses rising dramatically. N.L.A. or crazy priced parts on eBay I am mystified by the idea that we can't do more in parts or events and programs that benefit members near and far.

If I had a drinking problem I would not think it proper to ask you to buy me a drink, but since we all walk about in a CATatonic state maybe we are like minded enough to earn each others support.

When being introduced to the club I was given a word of mouth guide line. Honor the volunteers, unless you want their job, Honor the members as they fund the machine.

Everyone who posted here should go have a cold one and chill.

I have been a CAT member for 7 years now i think... and have been a TEAE member and SAOCA member for over 9... I have never lived in the USA... so i won’t be getting much from meetings and events... but i value the organisations, the newsletters, the help provided by the clubs running the forums and the comradery it provides... i see it more as a donation of thanks to help support the groups that help support my hobby. :)

I had no idea what it cost. I will join right away.

Middle of the USA

I haven't been a member of CAT, TEAE or STOAC as long as some and like Michael will most likely not attend any meeting or events of any of these organizations any time in the near future. I joined all of these clubs to support the people and cars and hobby. I spent many hours reading the CAT forum archive getting myself educated to the point that I could find my Tiger and feel confident that it was what I thought it was.

Small price to pay... Keep up all the good work all you volunteers, I appreciate all that you do and have done in the past.

I live in NJ, and could also get the benefit of this forum for FREE without membership. However, I feel my membership is a contribution to a great information and parts center for something we all love. Many members have devoted a large part of there lives making this possible. My $35 a year is a token investment for the continuity. My thanks to the past and current members that have made this possible.

I love the newsletter.
I hate freeloaders. I think the CAT site itself should have a cost, even if very small, say $5-10 a year. Very good information here.

As I recall, back when Rick decided to set up this Forum, the reasoning was that if the CAT membership dues were being used to pay the Forum's cost there ought to be something special for CAT members versus non members. Creating the parts for sale sections for CAT members was the outcome.

About 3/4 of CAT members do not live in Southern California. CAT has world wide membership and I believe it's the world's largest Tiger club. Members receive the newsletter, can purchase CAT Parts and participate in CAT events.

The budgets of CAT parts and events are kept separate from the general fund. The membership dues go into the general fund and pay for insurance, for the newsletter and other things like this website/Forum, as well as small donations to Tiger related operations such as the Rootes Archive in the UK or, in the past, the Tiger email list.

As Dave mentioned, the membership dues are only $35, the vast majority of which is spent on printing and distributing the newsletter. Membership Dues do not support CAT events.

No time like the present to become a member of CAT or renew an expired membership. Memberships are 12 months long not the calender year so there is no need to wait until January.

Use your PayPal account or mail the check to Bonnie, Membership Queen.

Other things

While not published a Library copy of the BON is available. You do have to pay shipping and insurance and the book is well worn and has CAT in big black felt marking all over it.

We also have a roster that tells you where your friends are. As this thread was started Disappearing Act this is how I roll.
I spend time armchair shopping see an item in the locality of my Homies, I mean trusted CAT members tell them and/or pay them to go get it if I really need it. If I don't need it I share info with them as a good deed done daily. Roster data make this easier as well as does the forum, it is a benefit of membership plus you get to know the secret handshake.

It would be a better forum IMHO if guys used a portion of their real names, added their city or some kind of profile but that's all optional.
S.T.O.A. no forum T.E.A.E maybe one post a week, S.T.O.C. , U.K getting attrition due to Facebook, but good info and good guys. Pacific Tiger, forgot their P.T.? very small C.A.T.O. site infected by e taggers and pill ads. Our real only other competition is S.A.O.C.A. but Tigers have a small section there, but all you have to put up with there is the occasional and 99% friendly jibe "Why did they mess up a perfectly good car with a Ford motor,"
Lastly the Tiger email list as Buck mentions, there live the really old school guys it is not a competitor but another archive, just going there searching for an old vin number may turn up nuggets of info about a car a former owner. It also has really great information is a really clunky wooden wheel format, but still fun.

Welcome aboard PITT40

CAT, like work, family and other clubs, has it's good and bad points -- but I feel the good outweigh the bad by a long shot. I have made new friends, purchased parts and learned a lot about the marque on this site. I have been a member on and off for 30 yrs and very happy to be "on" at this point in my life. I am only 400 miles away and yet have trouble making meetings and events--but when I have they are a great group of people and I appreciate what they do for the hobby. Just my .02.
