Door plastic MK2

Has anyone seen the plastic that is usually between the door panel and the door tucked into the window channel and goes up and down with the window? It is the width of the window and not attached at the bottom. I purchased the car from a owner who owned it for 46 years and don't think that it has been altered.

A Common Treatment

We've seen several originals done this way to deter moisture warping the interior millboard panels. Current treatments are usually clear 2 mil plastic stuck to the inner door skin from top to bottom against the inner panel. This does little to protect the handle post areas however. More modern polymer panels don't require any.

plastic

I have several doors with the plastic still on them. the panels have pretty much rotted away. it's was not fastened to the window and not inside the door. it's cut to the shape of the area behind the panel. some seem to be stuck on with a tar like glue. as randy mentioned, the holes around the handles look like there was just random size cuts made. I have also found pieces of the plastic bunched up in the bottom of the door.

Thanks for reply, was wondering what the other end of the plastic was suppose to be attached to since it is loose and has no evidence of glue or tar.

plastic

the plastic does not fasten to the window. it'was not installed inside the door

That's the mystery, its in the window channel and goes up and down with the window. Then other end is not attached to anything. Just hangs loose. Very odd to me.

PE film on my Mk 2 windows

My Mk 2 had 4 mil polyethylene film in the track or each window. The plastic protruded about a ½” to 5/8” at the front on both sides and was between the rubber which grips the window and the metal track. Based on this protrusion; you can see the plastic came up about ¼” on the inside. To my knowledge it was not attached at the bottom. I am the original owner. Pictures of remnants of the original film attached.
