In case some of you had not heard, long time CAT member Ed Foster passed away earlier this year. Ed was an original Tiger owner, and his car has won every award possible over the years. He and his wife, Karen, ran the parts department for CAT back in the 80’s.

The last time I saw Ed a few months ago, he was rehabilitating from a stroke. I brought my Dave Friedman photo albums to share with him, and he really enjoyed them. He was looking forward to returning home, so it was a shock to find out from Karen at the Channel Islands car show that Ed had passed.

I first met Ed at a CAT-I in Bakersfield in the late 80’s. I was between Tigers at the time, and marveled at his beautiful car. A short time later, I acquired my current Tiger. As is the case with most long-time Tiger owners, once they warm up to you, they start sharing their secrets and experience when it comes to showing and restoring their Tigers. Ed was no different, and soon he was showing me the shoe polish on the rubber molding trick, as well as many other ‘trade secrets’ he kept. It seemed like every Tigers United I attended, Ed was winning another big trophy. He said I was his good luck charm.

When I was moving from Tehachapi to Camarillo in 1998, Ed offered to keep my Tiger at his place until we got settled in Camarillo. I really appreciated that, and showed up with a case of Coors beer when I picked up my car. Ed really appreciated Coors beer!

Ed had some good stories about cars and motorcycles. My favorite is when he took his Tiger to Von Dutch to get the hood louvers done. He said Von Dutch did them all by hand- and they came out perfect. A fifth of whiskey sealed the deal!

At the TU banquets I would often find myself sitting with Ed and Karen. It was always fun, as long as you didn’t look at their cut of beef, which was just this side of still mooing!

I’ll miss Ed. It’s a sad fact that the few original Tiger owners we still have with us are aging. Enjoy them while you can. And…don’t forget to get their secrets.

Sorry

To hear about your buddy. I guess that's why some refer to us a caretakers of the these cars. :)

RIP. I remember the Fosters vividly from my early Tiger days, about 23 years ago. Their stunning yellow car was in a class of its own. I learned quite a bit from Ed about Tigers. He clearly enjoyed tutoring this newbie.

Here's a picture I could find at the moment...Ed and I at TU in Santa Maria:

Nice to see a little write up on Ed in the current issue of Tiger Tales by Bill Rogers, a long time friend of the Fosters.
