Fan belt tension issue?

Seem to be having an issue with the tension or alignment on my fan belt - hopfully not worse. After re-installing the belt the belt smokes and wines/squeeks. Wondeing if there is a proper tension, if I have the belt too tight or too loose.

Motor has not been run in about 6 months. All fluids are good and no leaks.

Belt Grip

Not sure how to communicate "too" loose? but it would be loose not tight.

Permatex Belt Grip at the parts store should do the trick. A replacement belt might be needed if it is old age? hard and cracked. Rubber is not 4 ever.

Have a look at page 15 of shop manual. The answer is kind of buried in the General Data Section under Cooling system. There are actual tension numbers and the rough (?) equivalent physical dimension of 1/2 inch total deflection between high and low points when you push and pull on it up and down. I believe this to be done in the middle between the generator and water pump pulleys.

You might also try spinning the water pump/fan and generator by hand with the belt off just to be sure they are turning freely and are not partially frozen and overloading the belt.

Also be sure the belt is correctly in the crank pulley groove. Had it slip out once on me when installing new belt. Kind of hard to see unless you give it a good stare with a strong light. Ran okay for a while with belt between the pulley and balancer but ruined the belt!

Well turns out it was mechanic error (me). Had the gen bracket mounted in the wrong location on the water pump. Back in business.

Thanks for letting us know. Hearing how a problem gets fixed is always appreciated info for the rest of us.:)
