Free beer and Pizza

Looks like I had a rear oil pan leak too. Will replace the pan gasket and rear main while I am there.

Does the toploader tail shaft housing easily come off for that gasket replacement?

Yup; five bolts & some cleaning. Done. Make sure the speedo-driven gear is out first.

To echo DrBill...AWESOME.

It takes me half a day to change the oil. Better I was not there to help...I would have slowed you down.

I've got an even better idea. I'll get Duke a plane ticket and all the pizza and beer he can handle if he'll come help me!

Let me get the thing back in first. In the BMW community, it is called wrench fests and that is what happens. Not really flying people in but providing food and "beverages" to those who show to help. Turns out to be great fun to the dismay of my spouse.

The transmission autopsy reviled that some moron (me) did not torque down the top cover and front bearing retainer bolts, there were about finger tight. Have the specs from David Keys and am doing it right this time. Replacing all gaskets and seals.

Duke..you work pretty fast for a government employee:eek:

As for the BMW wrench fest...took my BMW into the local BMW dealer for a new set of tires this week..damn rear tires just don't last. They worked at warp speed and delivered my car back with no valve stem caps and scraped out all four MSport wheels getting the run flat tires off !!! I didn't know a crowbar was acceptable tool on a high end BMW......

I don't see any snow on the driveway !!! You did good.....:)

Duke,

Did you put the music on iver the video so that we dont here the swearing and cussin' ? :p

also nice to see someone elese wearing gloves.. evenyone always makes fun of me for that

Facinating

That's really neat. Now, without the fast-forward talents, what would an ordinary tech shop charge for an R&R like that??

They can make fun all they want. You will not be absorbing oil, fuel and solvent through the skin on your hands. I plan on living a long time.

I would think 20 hours. That does not take into account everything they break.

There was a lot of swearing and cussin' going on.

New school wins by about 300 more HP ;)

I enjoyed the story!

Love to read all this info! All the music was great too. One question...If you hadn't needed to pull the engine to detail it, could you have removed the tail shaft housing bolts to get the housing back far enough to clean it, split the new gasket at the top to get it back in place? I was surprised to be able to loosen and rotate the transmission enough to change the top cover gasket recently.

Thanks!

I think that pulling the engine would be easier and 100% assured method to fix it.

Tranny has all new gaskets, seals and new rear bushing. All bolts torqued to spec this time with blue thread lock.

Here is a don't do......don't just hang the drive shaft out of the rear of the tranny to keep the fluids from draining out. If the DS is not inserted all the way it can damage the rear bushing and thus make installing the DS again VERY difficult. Last engine pull I did this and it took a wooden mallet to get the DS back in the tranny. Note the orange plug that allows the tranny to be filled and installed without fluid loss.

Thus, I installed a new rear bushing when the tail housing was off.

Nice detail/photo. You're right. It's worth the effort, with the engine out, to be able to do it all right. Thanks for sharing.:)

When I redid my shift linkage, I used the clips on all six link ends. Is there any reason to use cotter pins, other than originality?
