Fuel tank venting

Thoughts on how to get rid of the fuel smell in the car. Everything seems to be tight and per the way it came.
After talking to a fellow owner it is hard to accept that all that tank to tank slosh and resulting vapor in the car is something I must get used too.

There is a vent line that goes from tank to tank and runs along the top of the trunk by the hinges. If it is dry rotted it will cause the smell.

line

What I cam see without removing curtain looks pretty new. That said I am sure it will take more digging or head in trunk back to the false floor fun. Guessing that the rubber line goes tank to tank and the only vent is on the cap . A pasting I received from my car designer pal is haunting me,in that due to the vented system the car pollutes more sitting in garage than a ULEV Honda doing a crazy number of miles like 100,000 .
The problem is obviously more when tank is 1/4 or less. On a coasting round about the sound is strange the 1st time.
Lots of little things were Mickey Moused probably could be two hoses taped together.
The fun continues.

Get used to it

Not just the vented cap. Your carburetor is also open to the air (cleaner). If you go to FI ? you could reduce the vapors under the hood. Has anyone adapted a vapor recovery system? Like our modern mobiles.

I once asked a friend to put a Tiger in his garage for a couple weeks and he nearly called 911. Thought it would blow up and pushed it outside.

Fuel Smell

I assume he is an ex friend. Sounds like he needs to get a life. 40 years ago ever garage smelled of octane - it was a great time...

You should smell 6 old Hondas and a Tigerin a tight garage.
That's why a dryer or a water heater is on a platform in a garage.
I have a little dribble,
No not from where you are thinking.
The accelerator pump will loose a little gas too after being parked for awhile.
Lee had suggested that I should get used to it and that its part of the breed.
I thought I'd axe you all bfour I loose to many brain cells.

GAS LEAKS & FUMES

YEARS AGO I GOT TIED OF GAS LEAKS INTO THR MANIFOLD, AIR LEAKS, AND
GOT TIED OF REBUILDING THE HOLLEY DOUBLE PUMPER EVERY SPRING AND WENT TO AN EDELBROCK CARB. NO LEAKS AIR OR FUEL X 20 YEARS.

Smells

You do not have to put up with; had a 66 Mustang yrs ago with same smells; turned out a pinhole (and I mean pin) leak in the top of the tank(which is trunk floor.) Never could see but when driving would sluice around and vaporize inside of car; hard to diagnose, females whine, etc. Nothing like that so far in the Tiger, so put on the Scotland Yard hat, magnifying glass & track down culprit!

Sniff Sniff Boom

You can always go looking with a lit match ! Being from a generation that had real Ambroid model glues, etc., the odors of leaded fuels was just part & parcel of the ambiance. Fuel today just doesn't have the same aromatic eau de bliss. More like rotting veggies. Anyway, I would suggest that you do indeed have a leak somewhere, as it should not be that prevelant. 2 cents

My problem seems to be the opposite of yours. Mine smells after fill up rather than 1/4 full. I've always blamed the lower filler neck hose connection.

There are about 13 potential locations for a leak.

More smell when less full I would guess a vapor leak rather than fumes from a liquid leak. Check the vent hose as Duke mentioned and for a tight connection each end. How does the filler cap gasket look?

Mine smells after a fill up but I know it is the hose that goes from the filler neck to the tank ( has the vent line in it) but I have been too lazy to replace it--instead I make sure to only put in about 8 gallons instead of the normal 10+.

Where the gas fumes are coming from on mine is the seal at the sending unit in the top of the left tank. A new seal didn't help. I have also put Vaseline on it and the fumes go away for a short time but then return. I haven't figured out a way to keep it from leaking gas fumes short of putting RTV on it.

Not scratch and sniff

Now if I can get some burly help to shake car while I shake and sniff.
A floor jack will help.
It is worse wit top up, another reason to not drive car unless top down day.
Great responses Thank and Happy New Year

Gas smell..not sprout's !

After I completed the rebuild of my first Tiger, way back in 1981 ,I had terrible trouble with gas fumes in the 'cockpit'. I didn't understand what the problem could be,after all, everything was new?.Turned out that the guy that i had fit the new soft top had drilled into the top vent hose.( mentioned in a previous post by DukeMK1A!) After a new vent hose was fitted, the problem was solved. David.
