Geniune VIN plates

Much has been said on this and other forums regarding keeping the id plates as origionally installed by the factory. A comon way to tell was the replacement rivits. Now I was ferreting through one of my trays that holds various small items from my last Alpine restore and other items. One interesting one I have and had forgotton about was a specification plate and a blank Vin plate sourced from a British supplier. Attached to the replacement plates in a bag, are the correct small head rivits so the new plates can be fitted with no tell tale incorrect rivits. Wonder if they still have them?:D

Depends what type of tiger steven, the rivets on the MKI's are different to MKIA/MKII.

these are small pics.. but show the difference: http://www.classictiger.com/mudge/tac/nutac-add-on.htm elsewhere on norms site he has closeups of the various tags.

Well, I am not going to measure them however think the Brit's that had them made knew a thing or to. Meanwhile I am not going to use them, the vin on my Tiger will stay where it is. They may be a "what is it?" item for a Rootes get together.:D

A friend TACed his Tiger in the mid 90's and on the form they checked that it had the correct rivots--he laughed and told me he got them at OSH. I am sure they are out there, you just have to search.

I had the opposite happen to me...got my car TAC'd, sticker in place and certificate in hand- got home and looked at the paper work- the 'not original rivets' box was checked (or noted, I don't remember at the moment), and I had unmolested original rivets! I was so sure of my Tiger's pedigree I didn't bother to check the paperwork before I left!

I caught Tom Hall (Senior TAC inspector #1) at the next United and asked him to take a look at my rivets. Yep, they're original, alright. He was kind enough to write me a letter stating the ORIGINALITY of my rivets.

So, I guess it can happen either way. Hopefully, mine was just a clerical error.

And then She said . . . .

"Keep the original rivets" . During an extensive rust repair/crash repair/restoration we had to gently remove and recover the I.D. and data rivets on a MK 1 for a consumer. It can be done. . . . .I do not know if she has since had the car examined. amen

vin plate

my question is that if you left the plate on the car and took the body to be dipped, would the vin plate survive or would it dissolve? and what would blasting do to the plate? and how do you do a complete restoration and paint job without removing the plate? i've had 21 sunbeams and the vin plates seem to be pretty fragile. in fact i've bought a few that the plates had started to corrode away. is there anybody out there that can enlighten me on how they have done a bare metal restoration and worked around not removing the plate.

Is the car worth more if it has the original rivots? If the car TAC's ok then I would not see the difference, or am I wrong? Just curious.

Its not a value issue.. if the VIN has not been removed there are less questions about authenticity.. if it's TAC's.. no worries.
