Girling Booster

I just purchased a Sunbeam Tiger 1A and I am restoring it it to concours condition. The car has a Lockheed brake booster in place of the Girling brake booster. It works very well.
I am asking if the group thinks the Lockheed booster takes away from the concours rating of the car. I read somewhere that judges do not subtract for this substitution.

TEAE Concours Rules

In TEAE, we use standard deductions in the Stock Class for any missing or incorrect parts or components. So if your brake booster was the incorrect size, style, finish or had incorrect fittings or hoses/lines you could lose up to 2 points.

I have never seen a Lockheed booster so I do not know what they look like, but I would say there is a good probability it could cost a point or so.

The sardine tin style clamp is disposable item on the booster hose. Plus there's only a couple of hobby gui that made a good looking yellow stripe hose. Then you could drop down and look at the rack boots and see you don't have the original sardine tin style ties there. Have a source for the hose if you need it. I think the Lockheeds were seen on MG's and had a much longer snout that I believe is made out of cast iron. There are some pictures of them in the Moss motors catalog.

warren- would like to see you replace those boots which are 50 years old without disturbing those tin straps- good luck with that one- just took one apart -No oil and tension sleeve was history- I quest the sunbeam parts store is B/O on racks

My Lotus Europa cam with two Girling boosters originally. After two rebuilds of both, I put in the Lockheed boosters and changed to silicone brake fluid. That was 20 years ago and I have never had a problem with them.
So, I like the Lockheed boosters, but I don't want to lose 2 points.

I would like the source for the yellow stripe hose. Thanks.

I got an old sardine style clamp from Bryan's stash of stuff (thanks!).
Cleaned up a bit, straightened, and installed.
Looks old like the rest of the car.

I was just being the devil's advocate on removing those straps and you can take them apart but it takes a lot of trouble and they are really not multi-use items and that was my point. There's no reasonable facsimile replacement of them that was also my point. There is one that Moss motor s carries but it'snot great. One of my cars after being moved from a 30-year slumber As soon as I turn the wheel moving it out of the garage the rack boots split and it dumped out the remaining oil. So yeah I get it. IMHO the Lockheed unit is much more reliable than the Girling I have had no luck rebuilding Girlings and it takes an expert I think. If you are going for concourse you will have to use a Girling, but if you want to drive the car keep the Lockheed. Mine has lasted 25 years.
