Hi, relatively new member returning after a long hiatus. Hoping to please get some opinions on this Tiger https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/sunbeam/tiger/2225275.html

This is pretty much at the top of my budget and I realize opinions vary. I took a several hour drive today to go see in person. I wanted to look at the rust on the X frame area in person. The pics pretty much show everything and I only saw a dime sized rust hole behind the drivers quarter. Of course will need paint at some point but is one color and I like the green. I know some are not fans of a dealer purchase. This was a European specialty shop that said they did some trades and cash with a regular client. It seems reasonable as the little Tiger stuck out among the Ferraris, Porsches, etc.
Data tags etc looked legit, rockers, frame rails, and floors super clean. Concerns are non body color engine bay, no power booster, and no TAC in various degrees of importance dependent.
We are looking for a driving resto which are typically hard to find in my price range of about $30 +/-. I also reached out to an individual who helped with our first Tiger purchase in 2003. It has been brought to my attention, this car was on BAT in 2017 although I could not find the ad or pic. I was forwarded a pic from when it was brought out of long term storage and is definitely the same car.
The car has seen plenty of compound and detailing but is still a very old repaint, tired interior. Some decent extras are included etc. Hoping for any feedback or advice...

Thanks,
Dave

Tired but happy

Some time and money needed . Just spitballing, but there could be another 30K lurking to make it new again.

Looks like a good deal but verify it is a real one. May have covered up rust as it spent time in the NE. Comes with some nice options. Though the red Tiger also for sale on CAT looks like a good deal too! Eric

More pics

I you can get your pal to look at the Tiger specific areas and have at it on a lift with an ice pick and dull Phillips screwdriver. Please also look for the original paint in all hidden areas not hit by the respray. The black engine compartment is okay if there is 86 Forest green under it....

Guys seem to be looking for cars in the running restoration mode now. What bothers me is the holed X frame part above the exhaust pass parts.

Thanks for any thoughts and input. I actually looked at the car in person yesterday because of the same concerns for rust on the X frame. I figured it was worth a few hours to really get a good look. I am not an expert on anything in particular but the rust looked very isolated to the pass thru and clearance hump area (seemingly is this why they offer a repair patch for this area). I do have extensive early Mustang knowledge as well as hands on moderate rust repair with that model. We own a 1966 Tiger project and this one is a much better "starter".
I did poke around a little and floors, rockers, and rear frame rails etc. seemed/appeared very solid. Very dry appearing other than the areas shown in the photos. The undercoating can be problematic on any model with concealing problems. I could not see any obvious issues not seen in the ad except a small dime sized area behind the drivers Left quarter. The dealership was very accommodating and we put the car on their lift after looking at all the documents and receipts.
Yes, the red car looks great if we are talking about the one for sale on this forum, but appears sold and above my budget.
Thanks

Dave,

I don't see anything that makes me doubt that this is a real Tiger. But, you may want to check with Norm Miller to see if he has any info or concerns. A TAC is always a big plus... but this car has no obvious red signals (in my opinion). Hopefully, others will chime in if they see anything of concern.

I do not like ads that post only "medium" size resolution photos. I wish the website had pics with higher resolution.

As far as the underside rust goes... I think most of that appears as though it could be addressed properly without much expense (assuming you can do basic metalwork and welding).

The original Forest Green is beautiful, the repaint on this car is brighter and appears metallic (not like original). But, I am a bit biased, as my restored Tiger (the Mark II) is also code 86.

Good luck.
