How can I tell ?

I have a Tiger which I purchased many years ago, and used as a daily driver in the late 70's. It has the mag-style wheels and has had them as long as I have owned it. Question: How can I determine if these are real magnesium wheels, or just a look-alike?

They are made by American Racing, and have Silverstone cast into the inside of the rim.

Leaks

Magnesium is more porous so they may need air more often?

Magnesium is also more brittle and does not age well. Old Mags should be retired. (Not mounted with tires)

How about posting a picture. Four spoke "Libras" 13" were common in the 70's. They were/are aluminum.

mag v. alum

If you put vinegar on aluminum it does nothing, if you put it on magnesium it turns white and starts to bubble.

If you could post a picture it would help, there was a Shelby licensed 'goldvane' minilite style wheel that was made by American Racing, those were made of aluminum.

I am very familiar with the care and feeding of magnesium wheels. There is absolutely nothing wrong with old magnesium wheels provided that they have been stored properly, are sealed properly, have been inspected and even scanned for cracks and that any defects have been repaired properly. Do the web research and I am certain that you will be able to determine that your wheels are aluminum. Until then, be careful using them. If they are magnesium there are very few place that can and will restore them correctly. One is Harvey Weidman in Oroville California. Expect to pay about $1600 to have them redone.

I hope that your wheels are not magnesium and are aluminum. Very few magnesium wheels were manufactured and the benefit in weight reduction is something that you will never notice.

Light them on fire and see how well they burn under water....haha, JK. I have 2 magnesium wheels, they make great coffee tables in my car room.

Carroll Shelby Wheels-Europa Minilites

I have a set of 13" Carroll Shelby Wheels (europa minilites) similar to panasports. I believe them to be magnesium, they are pourous and leak air (not from the bead area but from the main surface of the wheel). How do you seal them so that they don't leak air?? Any suggestions/solutions?
Thanks
Mark

As requested, here is a photo...the thread does not want to accept multiples!

Wheels

These are worthless - suggest you send them to me in Atlanta immediately for proper disposal (I work for environmental engineering firm and we know how to deal with these things)...
