Inaccurate Rev Counter

Can the fitting of a Pertronix electronic ignition affect the operation of the rev counter? The rev counter on my Tiger is hopelessly inaccurate, reading high at lower revs yet the needle refuses to move past about 4200 rpm despite the engine speed rising.

I have tried adjusting the adjustable pot but that won't give an accurate reading across the range.

So now I'm wondering if there is an outside influence affecting the reading.

Lots of the aftermarket electronic igntion conversions effect the tachs, there is an isolator kit available from summit and other parts places.. do a search on the forum i think it was listed a while back.

That said the tachs can go out of calibration and are quite easily restored. Tom H on the SAOCA site did a nice write up on how to rebuild them.. i think TU site also has a write-up

The guys who restore our project instruments will always ask me about ignition mods. For a small fee, they will build in and calibrate for most electonic upgrades. Peter Nisonger (no affiliation) has done an excellent job for us, and there are several others with very good reps. . . . .
