A link from the article on the MKI Tiger Dale restored led to this ad:

Now, dont get me wrong.. this is one very nicely restored car... but when you pitch a car at the very high end of the market and call it "investment grade" and expouse the lenghts you go to make sure it is factory "a nut and bolt restoration focused on preserving originality while utilizing contemporary materials and processes." you want to get your details right...

for 95K i would want the correct air cleaner, dash, front plate bracket, wheel trims and a correct soft top.. not have either missing or incorrect parts.

Then there are things in that price range that might be nice, like clock, ammeter and visors.. a great car, yes... but if you are going to push the originality line.. make sure it is for that $

michael,
you missed the gas cap being mounted backwards. many cars in the U.S. did not and still don't have front license plate brackets. it would take a bunch of money to restore a car to this quality.

Bob,

I didnt mention the car has spax shockers either, ther are a few other detail things on the car as well..

If you actually read my original post you would see that i said it is a "very nicely restored car", but they are trying to pitch it as a factory original spec car and it is missing some fairly obvious parts that for this money should not be missing. At this end of the market it is either right or it's not.

Original Sin.

A bit 'Picky' but I see where you are coming from. The reality is that this Tiger will now survive for 20/25 years !. The soul of the car .. the bodywork has been done to a very high standard and for the money including the original cost of the car! it seems a fair price to pay. One of the much vaunted recent "resto's" in the UK was the "Works" Tiger ADU311B . I'm sure the owner paid far more for the car and the restoration.... carried out by a Healey Specialist ?. Still it looks great... and for ORIGINAL ? Painted the wrong colour just like the other Works car FRW667C... Original ..don't make me laugh!

The car is located not very far from where I live. I'm suprised I've never seen at any local British car show. The seat vinyl looks to be the wrong grain for a MK1. Shouldn't it be the smooth, pigskin grain instead of the pebble like grain? Very nice restoration but the car wouldn't score a 100 points in a proper concours.

First, I must say this is a NICE car. BUT, for years I have bitched about how people word the ads, when selling their cars. As pointed out this car is missing a number of parts, that keep it from being a complete restoration. On one hand I hope they get all 95, I doubt they will, but the more they get the more a complete restoration is worth, and of course a basket like mine becomes more valuble too. Hey wheres the brake booster?

If you are pitching it as a correct car, the soft top they have used is a period aftermarket AMCO top, they have a different grain to the original everflex tops and the original tops also have a light grey interior finish that closely matches the colour of the soft top frame.

i guess you can go into the things liek the wheels being painted silver (instead of the foam grey that look like a off white) is wearing the alpine S3/IV wheel trim rings instead of correct cross hatch dress rings. there are things liek the filler cap on backwards (easy fix) and a bunch of detail things..

like i said, this is a very nice car.. body looks really good etc... but when you claim "investment grade" and talk up originality you want to have your details correct.

tiger

why would rootes use the pebble grain material in series 4 alpines and not install it in MK1 tigers ? i have seen other MK1's with the pebble grain on the loose flap seats.

Oh Beer?

First, sorry ! I'm new to this game ?. When I read Michaels first post i was under the impression that the red Tiger was a tiger restored by Dale 'A'. This is not the case ! His resto sold for $120000. This car (posted) ,I now recognise, was a not done by Dale A? . So we now have a secondary question....how do you value reputation? Who restored the car posted in this thread ? Looks ok to me ..but pictures never tell the real story.Anyway my valuation just dropped a couple of notches..I was ever a coward!!. Back to basics ? I'm sure I dont need to tell any of you that the Clock,Ammeter and Visors are not Original to the basic Tiger. So here's a post of Dale's resto!

David,

Indeed we were not discussing the dales resto Tiger.. Dales car is very nice.

As to the clock, visor and ammeter.. the car we are discussing has the correct blanking plates for the clock and ammeter.. the comment was for the money being asked one might expect some of the options

so sorry!

once again ....just new to this The original post? ...I obviously didn't understand...so many clever people in this field? I know nothing and will defer to the clever guys . perhaps the Experts would post clearer information to us thick folk?....

original rivets?

The ad states, "Original rivets secure original data plates." Dont original rivets have a little thing in the middle?

I'm fascinated by what is & is not original, and appreciate the details from people here on the subject.

So, to broaden my knowledge:

Is the accelerator pedal correct? I thought they were supposed to be organ types?

Should the car have a panel light switch, or was that only fitted to some cars?

Is the red piping on the seats correct?

Finally (and this is getting picky I know!) is the ignition switch on this car in the right way up?

Thanks

1. The RHD Tigers have the pedals that have the pivoting joint organ style with a rubber cover that attaches to the floor, the pedal is attached to a metal linkage that runs across the firewall in the engine bay..
The LHD cars had a suspended pedal that didn't have a cover just metal and has a stop that mounts off the transmission tunnel to stop you overextending the pedal and snapping the cable throttle:

lots of people fit the aftermarket "TIGER" rubber pedal pad, not correct but stops your foot slipping and looks nice (IMHO):

2. All alpines and Tigers have a panel light switch. On early alpines it also controls the map/glovebox light.

3. On the early alpines and on early tigers the seats had contrasting pipping. IIRC this stops somewhere on the cross over body cars with the Gt interiors.. someone with a BON can probably give the correct VIN for the change.

4. I believe the key should turn to the left to start the car, so that should be correct (teeth down)

I purposely have mine teeth up so the weight of the keyring pulling down will cause the serrated teeth to grab hold and hang on- hasn't fallen out yet!
