Hi All,

Just want to share a recent success experience. The replacement I bought for the 1 inch hose from the overflow tank to the radiator was a bit of a struggle to get on and everything aligned comfortably. And to do that required a bit of a kink in the hose, although not too bad.

I found a tip in the old CAT notes that highly recommended a Gates 20565 hose. That is still a good number, and I was able to cross reference it to a Goodyear hose 63692, which is what I bought. What a nice fit! As is often the case, you need to use only a portion of the hose. Just cut off the accute angle end and use the longer remaining piece. Pic attached.

Cutting hoses?

I'm curious if we've reviewed the best known methods for cutting these reinforced hoses?

My simplistic mind is wondering if any of these options would produce a cleaner cut?

- PVC pipe cutter
- tree pruner
- hot blade (climbing ropes)
- scalpel
- friggin laser
- others?
- etc

Every time I've tried to cut similar materials I'll end up with an edge that looks far worse than that shown.

PS thanks for the great part number tip. Now what are all the other hose P/Ns now? Ill need one of every thing please. :)

There are several "professional" tools available, here is a typical one on ebay at the moment:

I usually just make do with a utility knife with one of those titanium edged super sharp blades. It is not like I do enough of this to justify the cost of a tool. Yes the cuts can be a bit ragged, but a little trimming of the bumps against a piece of wood makes them reasonably presentable.:D

As for the current over the parts counter numbers, hopely the updated Shop Notes will cover that. I am relucant to pre-empt that club effort. Sunbeam Specialties does carry the hoses and at a reasonable price it seems.

BTW, their molded heater core hoses are an especially nice fit. The current 1/2 inch generic heater hose is a bit thinner walled that the ones from the days of old. Leave a bit of gap at the firewall grommet. Rick's hoses have thicker walls that fill the grommet hole snuggly.
