License Plate Light

As I understand the license plate was installed by the dealer , sometimes on the trunk and other times under the bumper. With that in mind I guess the dealer would also install the plate light since it would either point up or down in order to illuminate the plate. Or did they come installed from the factory and if so pointing up or down ? Anyone know ? Just curious 🤨

The plate lights were fitted at the factory and always aimed at the boot ( trunk) lid. The dealers would flip them if they installed them under the bumper.
On the early Alpines this was no issues as it was a single glass lamp.

The later cars that used the twin lights on a bracket can be flipped.. But they rubber boots for thw wirring on the back of the lamps ends up facing upwards as they were designed for lamps facing up.

My December 1964 build date has the 2 lamps and the license plate mounted under the bumper, and I thought it looked strange with the rubber light boots facing upright but consider it a small price to pay having the plate below the bumper.
Thanks for the information

Then there is the Norm story of getting his boot drilled for the lic. plate by the dealer and the "that's stock statement,"
Then in discussions...
Some states require the plate to be a certain distance off the ground, think that was 14." and so on.

Sunbeam Specialties sell a plate mount that gets sandwiched between the trunk handle and the trunk lid eliminating the need to drill holes in the trunk lid..

This car as well as a couple of our other cars has the CAT bracket under the bumper. It also has provisions for the two lamps. Are they still available?

I cannot say if it is stock, but the C.A.T. price list shows this as part number B 38, with a price of $27.00.

I'm surprised that someone here hasn't come up with a cover that would hide the rubber boots and wiring on the light when used on a below the bumper plate. application.

The CAT brackets that are on this car and my green car are made in such a way that the lights are under the bumper and barely visible unless you're looking for them.
