Luggage Rack

The K car is a wanna be family truckster.
I have only had a worse trunk on my Karmann Ghia convertibles.
I bet if anyone's Mrs was asked that'd be it.

YEP! That's the movie that pic is from. We watch it every Thanksgiving. " where are your hands....between two pillows....those aren't PILLOWS!"

Wow, you guys have pretty much convinced me to ditch the luggage rack.
If I don't get the "Queens Elevator" when they quote me a price on plugging up the holes I will probably do away with it. I do think that back in the day when these cars were driven on a daily basis that a luggage rack was useful and appropriate. However for the breakfast runs, shows etc that I go on probably not as much. I do like the cleaner lines sans rack. My indecision lies in the fact that it came with my car and I am making an honest effort to keep it as original as I can. It did come with an Edlebrock F4B intake and a Holley 4 barrel carb so its had those mods already. That's about it that I've uncovered so far. I really love the car and while I would consider the type of driving I do more cruising than competitive I love some of the mods that you guys have done to up performance. As for Moonstone, well... not my favorite but not as bad as some would make it out to be. Midnight blue is not necessarily my favorite either but I am trying to adhere to original colors as best I can. I am more of a BRG person. I know all our opinions are subjective in nature but I really appreciate the responses that everyone has given. Thanks to everyone!

With the spare body panels I had shipped with my Tiger was a rear deck lid (trunk) that had 4 x 1/2 inch rods protuding from 4 places. The extensive welds had distorted the panel. As it is a spare, I treated the unit and preserved it. A future owner can decide how to remove the stubs without damaging the unit. It obviously had a rack at some time.

If it is originality you seek, see the link below for a photo/description of the rack that was available as a dealer accessory (second page). It sounds as if the rack from Sunbeam was attached/removed rather easily (no holes I would guess.) The one currently in place sounds more aftermarket. I vote for ditching it.

Nope, my luggage rack does not resemble that one in any way. Here is a photo of my car with the luggage rack.

 
The optional factoryvrack had 4 suction capscand a series of metal tethers with metal clips that go around the trunk lid so it was removed without leaving holes

From that angle and with the hardtop on she sure is a beauty (I'm sure from any angle she'd look just as nice though).

Now that I've seen what you have I'm going to waffle and turn 180 and say keep the rack. With the hardtop removed though it does affect the sleekness of the car.

To be fair... the catalog describes multiple rack systems, of which the Alpine Custom, Item # 4039, is depicted. There are two other Item #'s whcih are not shown, for trunk (boot) installation.

I agree that the paragraph was written to allow confidence in the "easy removal" for all systems. But how easy... may differ.

We have two racks. The first one, as delivered at the dealer (we've been down this road with seat belts) was considered too small. The second and big one, had heinous cutting out frames for the bottom of the lid to allow mounting. sad.

I believe this is the larger, which is NOT factory, nor immediate period either fwiw. Will look for the other too.

Thanks for the compliment! The paint is beginning to show its age which is why I am going to get a quality re-spray. You brought up a good point on the top off look. I think I am still leaning to no luggage rack but who knows. As I mentioned earlier I've got a little time before I have to decide.:)

I still say find a period piece of luggage and run that on there--would look nice.
Heck, you could keep your spare parts in there for breakdowns..... :)

I realize this is just a description of what was available but I learned to shy away from these types of contraptions. They may be easy to go on or off but in the process of attaching the clips the paint could get scratched or chipped and if the lid's a bit off center while the lid is being closed the clips can chip the body and lid edges. The lid has to be clean before the suction cups go on or you could get scratches there also and cups may leave a mark.

I remember when I first started school my dad and I were horsing around and he stuck a suction cup on the middle of my forehead. I wore it around for awhile but when time came to take it off it left a pink ring in my skin. Mother wasn't to happy with Dad but I wore the mark proudly to school. A Kalvin and Hobbes kind of moment.
