Matching numbers

I've had a Sunbeam Tiger since 1970 that is in terrible shape. I see Tigers for sale that claim to have "matching numbers". I'd like to know what numbers need to match. The Chassis number is B382000970 LRXFE and the engine number is 4307 F21KA. Are these "matching" numbers? I'd appreciate any information anyone can send. Thanks.

Not much info on your car taken from the BON. Its born on date(Jenson Date) is 65/11/25. No other pertinent numbers appear to be listed (listed as withheld ). Matching numbers can be quite difficult to determine sometimes with Tigers. You are usually looking at original number stampings on transmissions, differentials, and valve cover labels that match the VIN plate or other recorded media. You may wish to contact Norman Miller and see if he can shed more light on your car.
Good Luck

Most ads you see claiming matching numbers are just outright lies.

The engines aren't not stamped individually, they have a sticker on the rocker cover that gives a batch number, and there is the date stamp on the block, but if someone swapped a motor from another tiger in that batch you would not know.... Or someone can just swap the rocker covers .

The diff and trans have tags that are listed to given VIN and JAL . But the cars don't conform to the usual "matching numbers" on other cars.

Also look how many ads claim "frame off " restoration.... Still waiting to have that explained on a tiger!

On the front of the motor is a build date on the deck drivers side by distributor. Also a casting date hiding behind starter. Trans number is on passenger side and you need a mirror and a good flashlight to photo from underneath. Pinion end of rear end is a stamping .

Later on the numbers matching valve cover will be batted around. Please find and photograph numbers and tags as registry and those with the records do a DMV like screening where you tell them what you have then get a

or

. Other tags are on the carb and manifold but those are not as important. There is also a thread Tiger engine study and some good work done by R.Fraser and B.Glenn frequent posters on the Tigers email list. Please post us some pictures and ask if you need help.
