Monterey 2014

Texas @ Monterey

We'll be making the trip out; taking #2689 and hoping to participate in as much as possible with it during the week. Will definately be at the Laguna Seca corral a couple of days and Moondoggie's lunch. Looking foward to meeting all whose board names are familiar and those who have helped me with misc. questions & problems over the years. Also looking forward to some (high speed?) runs along Highway 1!

Leaving from Laguna Seca years ago the Tiger took 68 back towards Salinas and the 101. It turned right and headed south on G17 to see where it would go. Nice little 2 lane twisty-turny road right at the east side at the base of the foothills. I could look east and see the 101 running parallel and the Salinas valley off in the distance. Tree lined. Lots of shade, a one lane bridge and it seemed a lot of cattle guards.

I guess they were putting in new cattle guards. The paving hadn't been poured around the frames yet. The frame was maybe a 3x3 steel angle with one of the legs vertical. I guess the first one was finished off as I didn't have a problem with it but I came up on the next one so fast I couldn't slow down enough in time and bam, bam I hit that leading frame edge so hard it jarred me. There was a 6" wide by 3" deep trench on each side of that angle frame waiting to be poured and no caution signs. So I kept my eyes open for the rest of them and didn't have any more problems.

Some days later after I got back home I noticed a little thump, thump, thump as I drove down the street. I checked my tires and one was slashed clean across the treads down to the ply which left a 3/8" gaping slit across the width of the tire. Only thing I can think of was hitting that angle and it cutting like a knife. I don't think a person could make such a clean deep cut in rubber as that using a knife. I ran that tire until there was a 4" oval of exposed white ply worn thru while the rest of the tire looked good as new before I replaced it.

Without giving me what I deserve, should have made the reservation in January my wife daughter and son-in-law will attend if we can find reasonable accommodations. If anyone has a room they are not using or any suggestion I would appreciate it......... thanks, Lee and family

We can stay out of town within 30+ minutes of the event too.

At this point I would check Gilroy or some other hotel that way. We used to stay at the Courtyard there, nice place and about $140/night which is cheap for that weekend. Good luck and I will check with the Shelby club as they have had extra rooms in past years in Seaside.

We just booked in the last week and the rate ranges from $86 (wed/thurs) to $126 (fri/sat). Not bad at all as far as we were concerned...
