motor mounts

My shop notes are 30+ yrs old so I am sure the part number is out of date. I am going to replace my motor mounts-------are they just stock 289 Ford like in a Mustang? Can I just jack up the motor and replace the mount, or do I have to remove the cast piece that bolts to the frame? Thanks

Motor mounts and tigers are a big issue.. people have the new ones tear, sit incorrectly and some are just made wrong.

There was a discussion an while back on best source on the tiger list, but also CAT ran an article on how to make some templates to make sure the ones you are about to fit are correct... IIRC Dales Restos and Sunbeam Specialties went to some effort to source correct and good quality ones back in 2011.

Motor mounts

I recently replaced my original mounts with stock 65 Muatang mounts. You do have to support the motor with a hoist or jack under the oil pan. I had to file the bolt holes a bit to keep the engine forward off of the trans tunnel. Nothing is ever easy with my car!

Thanks--I may go get a set of Mustang mounts and compare them to what I have, no guarantee that mine are "correct" but they work fine and the engine sits right where I want it.

I just replaced the original mounts, as I had the engine/trans out to fix all the leaks. I used Anchor Industries Part Numbers 2220 and 2221 from Summit. They looked to be identical to the ones I took out, and the engine position was perfect for everything to line up-- shifter is in the same place, fan clears the radiator, etc.

I had to file the bolt holes a bit to keep the engine forward off of the trans tunnel. Nothing is ever easy with my car!
Is it possible that you have the mounts on the wrong side? The stud that goes to the cast brackets is offset versus the bolts to the block, so they are different LH/RH. If you had them on the wrong side it would all bolt up, but the engine would be in the wrong position front/back.

After the car was together I had to unbolt them from the engine a few times to shuffle around spacers, since I put in a 6-bladed fan that was larger than the original. I'm pretty sure that you could get the engine high enough to get the mounts out, but it's so easy to take off the brackets that I would do that. In fact, I would recommend unbolting the mounts from the engine, loosening the big nut, and unbolting the cast brackets and taking them out together. Then swap on the new mounts (loosely attaching to cast brackets) and put them back in.

Nice post

Is the hood on your car and clearing the air cleaner?
I have less than 3/16 clear on out board edges.

Bruce has issues ,

with the air cleaner and hood. I took easy way and got shorter K n N.
Great post thanks for posting P/N.

I haven't noticed any hood-to-air cleaner clearance problems, but I'll check it with some clay and let you know what I find.

I checked the air cleaner to hood clearance and there is plenty, at least where I tested it. Is this the spot you have problems? My engine is definitely raised from where it was when I took it out, with all original mounts. Because of the new fan I had to bring it up probably 1/4"+ with spacers between the mount and engine. I can't tell if the filter is any shorter than it should be, but I got it from Classic Sunbeam and it looks the same height as the one I took out. Do you still have the stock intake and carb?

I wish I had that kind of room under the hood--the edges of my air cleaner barely touch the hood when shut. I am running a K&N filter I believe, Holley 4bbl and high rise intake.

clearance

Hi Jeff, on my car the top front edge of the air cleaner housing is where it's close to the underside of the hood, if you haven't already you might check there also.

Plenty of room there too. I imagine the 4 barrel manifolds are quite a bit higher.

Looks like

A 2 bbl carburetor Jeff I also have a F4B and 4 bbl carburetor .
I have 1/4" on out board edge and had 0 fun with old aftemarket air cleaner from Summit.

I appreciate your PM and the info about your R and R with the two post lift.
After some fun on the exhaust with the car on ramps I'm thinking I gotta have one too.
Interesting color looks close to mine, would make a nice Avatar for ya.
Cheers
