My 'new" Tiger

thanks so much. The Maxxis will fit my car fine and look good. I found them on ebay for 102 each and free shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231282066836?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Enjoy your new car. Lee

And P.S. I am jealous, I thought my car was original till I saw your car.

Lee, look at the pictures of the Maxxis vs. Milestar. They have a similiar tread and may be the same manufacturer. The Milestar is about $40 less per tire. Not quite as tall though. To me the 5/8" whitewall on the Maxxis looks a little better than the 1/2" on the Milestar.

Please post a picture when you get the Maxxis tires mounted.

This discussion is very good for the other Tiger owners considering driving on OEM size/type tires (although radials). My car sits high and a taller tire will look better. The seller on ebay is not a tire dealer and buyer beware low feedback and the date of the tires may be older too. That is the risk not buying from a local dealer or one of the vintage tire dealers. Ebay fun facts provided because of my many years of selling and buying on ebay.

Your great posting of the pictures has put me on the fence now. The Maxxis letters on the side are more bold and the other tires are more subtle. So now I need to weigh height, whitewall width, and looks. I am stuck again. Lee

But I am cheap and saving the shipping and a few dollars makes me willing to take some risk. If anyone can find these cheaper please let me know before I pull the trigger. Lee, so many Tigers I see are running around on short tires. When I put original 24" tires on the Shelby Prototype I got a a few comments on how tall they looked. People were surprised to hear they were original size. I'm not screaming around corners so a 70 or 80 series tire is ok for me. I don't like the look of low profile tires.

As for finding the Maxxis tires try going down to a local tire shop to see of they can get them for you to look at. Then you can check the date code.

I've got a small town tire shop here local in Morgan Hill and they had the Milestar tires there for me to look at. They looked great in person. They also will order me a set of tires and if I don't like they way they look they exchange them for a better size. I've done that several times. They match Tirerack pricing too.

This chart is a good start for figuring out what size tire you can use. Tiger's should be on the first or second line. I know I always ran 185/70-13 tires on my Series V Alpine.

Very good discussion on tires, unfortunately lost in us loving your new tiger. I put my cosmic rims and low profile tires on my beater and they look terrible. But I am an unusual Tiger owner because I am trying to un-restore mine back to as original as I can get it without any new parts except tires and mechanical stuff. I have driven and owned crazy cars and want to enjoy my tiger mostly as it was intended a fun car with a few design issues. Lee

While my Tiger isn't as original or as like original as yours its not too far off.
My philosophy on mine is similar to yours but at the same time I love to see some of the mods that others have done. Beautiful car by the way.

Maybe it's a good idea to post the tire info in a separate post labeled something like factory original stock 13" tires and wheels. I'll do that later today or in the near future.

Congrats! Great looking car. Enjoy it to the max! As for the radio... It's your car/It's your call...

Thanks Rob. Hopefully I can get out to the garage tomorrow to take a look at the car. Have the Good-Guys here in Pleasanton so will be up doing that for a lot of the day.

Previous owner just sent me a photo of my car circa 1970.

Started initial clean-up of the car. Dismounted tires so I could clean the rims. The BF Goodrich whitewalls are now being mounted. I'll add some pictures as soon as they're done.

Engine compartment appears to be very original. Most hose clamps have been changed so I'm gathering correct replacements. Plug wires appear to be original as do some of the hoses.

Removed the aftermarket Panasonic radio.

Awesome

But there goes any claim to a never driven in rain or bad weather :)

I thought my VW's back in the bias belted days were squirrley. An old 70's gas crisis suggestion was to drive like you have an egg on the accelerator pedal.

I just got a Tiger with the hood emblem like on your prototype. I'm guessing that it is off a earlier round corner car.

Great car, hope to get up to your neck of the woods again and see her.

Great picture--sometimes the old photos and paperwork are more interesting than the actual car. You have a great time capsule there.
Love the 4x4 snow tires on the car..haha

Here's some shots of the wheels. Still have pretty good paint left on them.

Got the wheels washed and waxed so the new tires went on. Now I need to finish cleaning the hub caps and trim rings.

My car came with a total of 9 wheels. 6 wheels are a 65 code, 1 is a 66 and 1 is a 67, and the other is an unknown brand and year. That one has 4 slots in it. Previous owner told me that he bought 2 extra rims from the dealer back in the late 60's. Those were so he could have a set of snow tires. I'll have to ask him why he had 4 extra rims....not 2. The 66 wheel is painted silver but I'm not sure if it came that way.

When I got my car it had one black rim mounted on the passenger front. That was the one with the 67 code and it's clear that the wheel came painted all black. Paint loss is minimal on 4 of the wheels that were on the car so those will be the rims that stay on the car. The black 67 may become my spare because the backside looks very good.

Took the Tiger to the Morgan Hill All British show. There were 5 Tigers, 1 Series III Alpine and a Humber Super Snipe Wagon. In one of the photos in the background there is an Anglia fire truck. very cool little truck.

I saw that fire truck at the British show in Dixon earlier this year--very cool. Looks like a nice setting for your show.
