Update

Jim Lindner came over to give me a helping hand today.

Started with TDC: It turned out I was 180 degrees off.

Next: Set cold lash for mechanical lifters.

Put back together: Verified plugs/wires.

Started engine: Very smooth, but runs at 5000-5500 rpm so cut the engine with the ignition switch. Pegged the stock tach. :------

Verified timing and rpm with timing light and engine analyzer: @ 10 BTDC and 5000+ rpm.

What is the consensus; timing or carb?

Thinking that if I advance dist to make it 14-16 BTDC for hipo that it would run faster, so didn't mess with the dist any more.

Started messing with the carb some, but decided to give it a rest after a day of putting the engine back together and getting it started/running. :)

Now I think it is a matter of fine tuning after listening to your helpful hints.

Regards,

Only way the car idles that fast is the idle stop is screwed in way too far or more likely your throttle cable is not allowing the throttle plates to close all the way.

Not timing fer sure, but more likely a bunch of air sneaking in from somewhere. See other post suggestions.

Throttle cable Too tight was the answer

I verified that the throttle cable was too taught and the primaries were open.

Screwed in the adjustment bolt under the accelerator bracket and let out the throttle cable until I had enough.

That was the trick, idle went down.

Thanks guys for your helpful suggestions. I should have figured it out that the carb was not in the same location and needed the throttle cable to be adjusted.

She runs after 30+ years in storage. Too bad I missed her anniversary, but I am happy none the less.

One more Tiger to soon hit the road.:)

10 BTDC and 5000+ rpm?
Either your static timing is way retarded or your centrifugal (mechanical) advance isn't working. Your timing should actually be around 35 BTDC at that RPM with a dual-point distributor.

Accelerator Cable Issue

The cable was too short and the primaries were half open.
I adjusted the bolt on the gas pedal and had enough cable to not have tension on the carb.
Idle went down to 2200-2500, just right for cam break-in.
Now I need to adjust the idle down to normal.
