new plates for my tiger

Okay it's time to get this thread back on track.......Anyone applying for YOM plates does not have plates that came with the car at the time of purchase
so forget all of that number letter mumbo jumbo....The DMV is only interested if the plates are 63 style black & yellow and are useable both front and rear. You must have the correct registration tag on the rear plate for the year that your tiger was first registered. You need to come prepared with form REG 352 rev 2/2009 and bring a full sized copy ( picture) of the rear plate that will be sent with the forms to Sacremento DMV head quarters...It takes about 4 weeks...

My MK 1A, originally registered in 7/06/67, has plates starting in U. Since the car was inop and couldn't make it to DMV and last registered in the late 80s, had an addl form that was signed by CHP verifying the vehicle VIN to the registration. That was 3 years ago when I transferred the title/registration from the second owner who never fully transferred the title only kept the registration in suspense.

I've got to admit that reading all of this thread bears frightening entertainment as I watch the creeping bureaucracy attempts in our little backward State. Having a cheap/conservative citizen legislature has helped, but damning progress marches on like a giant tidal bulldozer . . . . .Our antique titled, custom-lettered vanity plates costs $25.00 one time only. After that, the local and state's annual renewals are decreased by age and expected road use which amounts to pocket coffee money.

Amen

Moondoggie, as a habitual right turner to threads I understand the temptation to run with a jibe or tack away from the mark.

I had the total conversation with Lee the in and outs of the process. You are spot on.

A slight correction on my math though it is 10 bucks additional to have the YOM per year. Just got mine, 97 bucks for 1 year a little more then my 69 CB160 Honda, go figure.

That makes the pay back period 6 years before he has a return on his plate investment purchase since he paid 180.

But what is most important we get a tag that really mocks the "California Car"
look of a indigenous Cat.

I went to the DMV today. They took my 45 dollars and it is in the hands of the DMV Gods in Sacramento. Took my old plates and gave me a temporary sticker for one month.......ha ha like they will approve by November. Lee

I've been very surprised by their quick mail service, faster than standing in line. I would guess you'll have it before the end of next week.

Just an update since this was a good discussion of YOM plates. I have been checking my DMV site and watching the mail. No sign of approval as of the Saturday mail. 2 1/2 weeks now. Lee

October 30, three and a half weeks and no approval. Looks like it will take every bit of 5 weeks for approval.

stickers came today. Thank you DMV for this program. I love my new license plate number too. Lee

Did you have to have a reg sticker from the 60's on the plate? If not I am ready to go down there with my blk/yellows.

Si

You must have a sticker that matches the year your car is.
Reproduction ones cost 15 .
Reclaimed a little more 40 or so. The voodoo nature of the program says they record the old sticker no. that old no. becomes their way of recording that it is a 1966 plate or whatever yr.

Yes many have gotten an application with the same number sticker a sign
the sticker is a reproduction.
I always toss my set of chicken bones before and after a DMV trip.
and always after they suspense my app to Sacramento for good luck.
I have not taken the chance they would reject a repop sticker.
Not worth it...

Warren is correct......
I do know that the DMV checks the serial numbers of the renewal stickers
and will void your application if you have bought a reproduction sticker.
I bought my original sticker from :

Frank Whittle @ open-cut@sbcglobal.net he somehow can get the adhesive
to let loose from the old plate then is able to reapply new stuff that works
just like the original stuff.........You will likely have to pay upwards of $100
and prices maybe going higher since the AG is working to shut these guys down...

Yes, I had to have a 1966 sticker in good condition stuck on my plate. The sticker came with my plates.

I am not going to use the aux plates that were provided by the dmv. I plan to put my stickers on my YOM plates. I know that law enforcement does not care how the plates look as long as they can tell the car is registered. With the way they check cars on the fly I would never be pulled over for illegal display of tags unless they needed a probable cause to pull me over. Lee

repop stickers

For what it's worth I've done three YOM plate assignments with the repop stickers and they all had the same serial number. I didn't do all three on one trip.

Each time the DMV employee dutifully writes down the number of the repop sticker on the YOM form, briefly checks out my black plates, makes a photocopy of them and then takes my $45.

That all gets sent up to Sacramento for the experts to check.

In about 6 weeks I get my acknowledgement that it went through.

In my three episodes I have little doubt that I could have passed off repop aluminum plates as well, the only thing the local DMV person has cared about is whether the plate number/letter combination is already in the system, there has been little interest in the type of metal the plates are made of.

The only thing Sacramento looks at is the photocopy so as far as they are concerned the plates could be made of cardboard.

For this reason if you are holding a nice set of clear plates and haven't done the switch yet maybe it's time to get on that project, they may not remain clear forever.

Bob J.

I agree the ugly metal tags they give you are ugly and don't fit on a tiger. I cut some square tags out of thin aluminum that cover the tag location painted them black to match the plate and attached the tags to those. I used
the top screws to mount them and from a few feet away you can't see them and you can remove them at car shows if you want to look really original.

I will post what I do. Either I will just use the '13 sticker on the opposite side of the 66 tag or I will use the Feb sticker and 13 together on the left side with only the "F" showing with the 12 over the rest. All my options are not legal but the fact that it is legally registered I don't really care. Lee

1971 442 w-30 convt 4 speed
1971 Vista Cruiser 5 speed stick

Hmmm, the oldest sticker I could find on my plate is a '69 so might have to buy a repro. I will ask my DMV gal and see what she thinks. Thanks.

UPDATE......
I purchased a 1965 sticker from ebay, great seller. I took my blk/ylo plates and the sticker to my DMV girl today, $40 and some paperwork and I get them back tomorrow. Hope all goes well, if so I will have my old plates on the car Saturday. :D

the d.m.v. does not care the plate says long as there d.m.v. cleared proper means car bought new in california in 1965 plate starts with R 1966 starts with S 1967 starts with T (only exception registration expires september or later may be titled the next year so a late 1967 may have a U witch is proper for 1968 the letter V is proper for 1969 last year for black&yellow plates

Finally found correct info for license plates issued during the black plate era in California...btw, my '67 Tiger had black plate starting with "V", so all is well. The plate years and letters are at the bottom:

The California black
plate was the first plate the
state has issued that has remained in
circulation, prior to that plates
were replaced every few years, 1951 and
1956 were the recent times. In
1963 every vehicle in the state was issued a new plate starting with
AAA000 for automobiles and A00000 for commercial (trucks). To see these plates on a vehicle use to signify that a vehicle is an original California Car and has been in the state its entire life (for the most part, more on that later).
There are a lot of misconceptions about these plates and I hope to clear some of those up. In 1963 every DMV office was sent a stack of plates to be issued as part of this replacement run, at that time one might have been able to determine a county based on the sequence but aside from that California does NOT have series assigned to particular counties. The initial release of plates used up everything from AAA to about RDA, it is virtually impossible to determine the proper sequence for a 1963 or 1964 vehicle as they were caught up in the mass reissue of plates.
In
general it is commonly accepted that the plates ran out near the end of 1969 so it might be possible to see a 1970 model year car with a black plate (trucks through 1971, more later.). On all plates in California regardless of where the letters fall the numbers change first then the letters so you have
AAA000 b AAA002 through AAA999 b AAB000.
In any system you will always see
vehicles that are
older that the sequence, this can happen when it is brought in from out of state or needed replacement plates for some other reason. You should never see a plate that is too old for the vehicle this is a problem that you will see with YOM (Year of Manufacture) programs where you can put old plates of vehicles that qualify.
Understanding the distribution one can
better select a plate that might have been issued to the vehicle when new.
This list outlines approximate sequences based on issue date not model year
