New SS Exhaust System

I'm wondering if anyone has any feedback on the stock exhaust system that Sunbeam Specialties sells? My system looks pretty bad and debating whether to:

  • Try to salvage the pipes and have a shop just install new mufflers, which might last for awhile, maybe.
  • Have a shop fabricate new system.
  • Get the Sunbeam Specialties system.
  • Other systems out there? Non-stainless is fine.

Car and engine are stock for now, and don't want to mess with the X frame cutout. Current setup has 15" muffler on the left and a 10" on the right, weird.

Thanks!

Original was Tiny

Any motor upgrade will pretty much outstrip the OEM size tube without a cross balance tube. 10" muffler length was the stock size to nest between the hangers and pumpkin. The available 13" 2/3 chamber stainless is a good choice. Following the stock run location will take some forethought with slightly larger tubes, but worth the efforts. The stainless bologna tips available can duplicate the OEM look also. Just sayin'

Good $ after bad

Why touch it twice or more? I get it you don't want the new stuff to outshine the survivor flavor of the car. Putting money into a rusted system seems to be a band aid other than a make over. The SS seems too nice although you could always rattle can antique it a little . Think the car would like a 2" system with a little flattening where needed. They really mashed the 1.5 pipes a lot on the car I'm working on. I don't thin anyone looks at a survivor car and says shame it doesn't still have the pea shooters. I don't know how many small motorcycle mufflers I tried to save. As you weld the thin metal pop or fizzzz then the holes are 3X the size. These cars have enough challenging things with the mechanical things...

That said the orginal mufflers on this were replaced with some hotdogs...but even the was done over 40 years ago

Yeah, trying to salvage the old system ain't going to happen. I talked to a good muffler shop today and I think they would do an okay job building from scratch, maybe 2" aluminized steel with stainless tips. Talked to Rick at SS about his system and it sounds good too, and the tips are polished to mimic the original, just small, but would work fine. The SS system is what I'm leaning toward now, plus I could use it as an excuse to take a drive down to his shop. If the day comes where I have a built 289 and headers, then it would definitely have to be replaced.

Nice looking Tiger!

My project

Has a mix of old stuff too. Pea shooters hooked up to Mitchell glass packs to the original mashed stock pipes. I have what I believe to be a period kit from some vendor I pictured in another thread. I'm look at using them as personalized and as most similar to what original owner did to the car in 67 but he didn't go all 2".
Since it's together and driving now I'll PO the neighbors a little more ;)
