I believe we have mutual agreement here that the wheel wells were painted same as body color.... therefore, they were the same color. but that's a bit of a trick answer...
Where we have less agreement is what, when, how additional undercoating and maybe even other paint may have been added...and where those may have been added (meaning importer of record).
The auto show pictures show body color wheel wells...as shown earlier. alas, this alone would not prove final status at each importer. Nor does it equate to dealer delivery, nor final customer delivery... This remains true today, where manufacturers often use cars at shows and/or images of cars which are equipped with options not available in each country of import.
For the US, it is inferred that many if not most cars had black undercoating, manually bristle brushed on in some areas, for the underside (belly) and wheel wells.
If you still have undercoating underneath, do you not have coating in the wells at all? Blasted away?
Also, just how would you intend to re-coat? Not removing the older and spraying over it?
I had the belly undercoating left on. The stuff in my wheel wells flakes off pretty easily. One can see the layers of color. I had the car painted and the wheel wells too. But, personally, I prefer the darker liners... so I'm kind of in the same boat.
