Original Wheel Well color

I am in the process of having my tiger repainted. Mine was undercoated with black undercoating and I haven't decided whether to leave the undercoat as is or have it redone. If I have it redone I am thinking of using the stuff that can take paint. This is the same stuff that I believe is used on rocker panels on some automobiles. My question is, were the original wheel wells painted body color or were they satin black as they left the factory. I see them both ways. Not sure it makes a heck of a lot of difference but trying for as close to original style as possible if going to the trouble in the first place.
Thanks guys.

Here's a shot of a brand new one...

6 or half dozen

I believe we have mutual agreement here that the wheel wells were painted same as body color.... therefore, they were the same color. but that's a bit of a trick answer...

Where we have less agreement is what, when, how additional undercoating and maybe even other paint may have been added...and where those may have been added (meaning importer of record).

The auto show pictures show body color wheel wells...as shown earlier. alas, this alone would not prove final status at each importer. Nor does it equate to dealer delivery, nor final customer delivery... This remains true today, where manufacturers often use cars at shows and/or images of cars which are equipped with options not available in each country of import.

For the US, it is inferred that many if not most cars had black undercoating, manually bristle brushed on in some areas, for the underside (belly) and wheel wells.

If you still have undercoating underneath, do you not have coating in the wells at all? Blasted away?

Also, just how would you intend to re-coat? Not removing the older and spraying over it?

I had the belly undercoating left on. The stuff in my wheel wells flakes off pretty easily. One can see the layers of color. I had the car painted and the wheel wells too. But, personally, I prefer the darker liners... so I'm kind of in the same boat.

The question asked by the author of this thread was...

"My question is, were the original wheel wells painted body color or were they satin black as they left the factory"

answer was body colour...

I'm sure what the dealers did before selling the cars varied greatly. I bet they would convince whoever would listen that adding some undercoating as a dealer installed option with a markup of xxx% would be a good idea! Same goes for a lot of dealer installed items... still does

No doubt many dealers sold undercoating to new buyers.. some may have done it automatically in some salty places.... fromt eh factory it would have been body... afterwards... well results vary.

people often apply the plyable coatings these days and spray body colour over the top to get the best of both worlds. I guess it dpends what you want... factory correct... factory look or just and idea of what was/is out there. :)

thanks everyone.
I think I am going to have them redone to body color. The old stuff will
be stripped off. I was talking to the body shop/paint guy and he was the one who recommended this rubberized paintable liner. He told me that it was paintable and held up well to small rock impacts. It apparently is the same stuff or at least similar that one would see sprayed on the outside of some rocker panels on some of the new cars.
