Plate location

So was talking with a pal today and it came up how did some cars get trunk drilled, and some get the under bumper treatment. Dealer choice, or factory choice with lighting up or down.

I know how we all like polls so if you'd like to reply above or below is your choice.

I say above looks nicer and gets less road grime on it..

When my Tiger was roadworthy after the restoration, I put the plate below the bumper. It never looked "quite right"- to my photographer's eye it seemed awkward somehow, hanging down there between the exhaust pipes.

I eventually moved it up, not caring if it meant drilling a couple of holes in the boot lid. Lighting is "up."

I've been told by a couple of guys who know a lot more about these cars than I ever will, that plate location was up to the dealer. ???

In or out of the closet

Since I don't have a keen photographer's eye ,wouldn't know awkward if it was floating in a punch bowl, and my tag has road grime on it, I must vote for under.

location

late alpines with the non peaked head light rims had the rear bumper with the lights in the bumper facing up. they had brackets on the trunk for the plate. i have two of these trunks and bumpers. did many of the MK 2 tigers have this setup?

Mk II Rear Plate

My Mk II came from the dealer with the rear license plate above the bumper. However, there was no bracket for the plate - just a couple of holes drilled into the trunk lid. I don't know if this changed at some point in the run of Mk IIs. My car was in the first 50 or so manufactured.

I prefer it below the bumper. I think every Tiger I have owned had holes in the trunk lid.:(

With "Sunbeam" on the trunk lid, I think it gets a little fussy with the plate attached there, also. Mine is under the bumper, with the plate lights flipped over facing down. Yes, the wiring shows some, but if that is a bother you could fabricate a plate to cover it fairly easily.

plate low cation

proper plate location is under bumper same as front of car (who in the world drills holes in deck lid not even rootes group)

While I have seen several period road test in the USA where they mounted the plates under the bumper.. the vast majority seemed to put them on the boot (trunk) lid. Some used brackets some drilled into the boot lid.

in the Uk all the cars ran the plates on the lid.. and if you look at the factory promotional pics and videos of both the alpines and tigers they ran them on the lid. these days.. do as you wish.. as long as the states laws allow you.

on my SII alpine its under the bumper, no holes in the lid as they were filled during the restoraiton, on the tiger its on the lid... best of both worlds?

plate

i didn't mention that i use the mounting plate / light bracket available thru the CAT parts. it puts the plate under the bumper and with a little gentle bending you don't see the light wiring. i doubt that any states have regulations that where the plate has to be. they just need to be visible. i saw one car a few days ago that had the plate in the back window. most dealer plates have a magnet and they stick them wherever.
