Awesome picture... where was it taken? i believe it ran with the Hardtop at Nassau speed week back in '64 or '65?

December, 1964- Nassau. The hardtop was on so the Tiger could run in the GT class. Dave Friedman photo.

Yes, it's the same Sports Car Forum Tiger that John Morton drives for us in vintage races.

However it's not the Tiger pictured at Nassau. That was the former yellow Shelby American Tiger. It had been crashed so many times and was so used up that after that race all the pieces were stripped off it and transferred to another (Tiger) tub (#605). The old tub (AF3) was then destroyed on orders from Rootes.

The SCF Tiger(#605) not only set the record mentioned in the ad but won several National Points races in 1965. It also scored about as many National Points as all the other Tigers combined.

Buck,

So the original Shelby Tiger race car was an early prototype tiger (alpine ford 3) ?

race tiger

buck,
didn't it have down draft webers at one time? i seem to remember that when it was at doug's it had a section of the bulkhead cut out .

Racing Tiger

A little off subject, but early in the Tigers life I read about a Stan Peterson racing one. I am wondering if this is the the same Stan Peterson who used to come out to New Zealand on a regular basis to compete in our Southern Festival of Speed. The last car I recall him having was a BRM V12 F1 car. I think he lost a lot of cars in bushfires in California a few years ago.

There is a notch in the fire wall in the heater core area.

I was told it was made to accommodate the Holley LeMans carb.

Yes, the Shelby Tiger was one of the pre-production AF cars.

In fact the SCF Tiger still has the hand made pre-production metal engine hangers that are different than the cast production version.

I've seen the same fabricated hangers on Graham Vickery's & Darrell Mountjoy's pre-production AF cars.

Dan Walters feels the pre-production hangers lower the engine slightly while also moving it a little to the rear. I've never got around to using a tape measure to confirm.

Buck thanks for the additional info.. i guess that means onw less of the pre-rpoduction cars survived.

Hottigr... where are you getting all these great Dave Freidman photos? I know that pics as on of the shots from the shelby garage when they were building the race tiger.. one of the halibrand wheels is in the foreground.. have seen a similar shot from another angle...

Michael- A few years ago I thought it would be a good idea to try and acquire as many of Dave's Tiger pics as possible. I thought it would be a shame if no one was able to get these before Dave passed away or ? I contacted Dave and asked him what it would take to get copies of them and we struck a deal. That amounted to 71 pictures- not every picture he ever took, because a lot of them were from similar angles, etc.- but, what he sent me was representative of his work with the Tiger. It wasn't inexpensive, but it was certainly cheaper than trying to obtain the pictures one at a time.

I'm glad I did this when I did...I don't think you can order directly from Dave anymore- his collection is in the hands of the Benson Ford museum and their research system would seem to make getting these photos a pricey proposition if one were to undertake this now.

Before I did any of this, I made sure I had Dave's blessings for using the pictures for CAT and the newsletter (TigerTales). That was important to me. If you subscribe to TigerTales you'll see the occasional 'Friedman File' that I contribute to the newsletter (when the editor has space available). Keep your eyes open for more in the future...Kirk

Back in the 80's I purchased one of those carbs and put it on my Tiger, it fit the stock firewall but you would swear it was rubbing---but no paint ever came off the car.
