Rare Tiger at auction

Bob, all the rally tigers were LHD... due to early production and then i gather while the later cars could have used RHD given the rallys were on the continent LHD made more sence.

This car has been up for sale in the past 2 years and didnt draw the reserve, teh car was rebodied by rootes IIRC before its last rally due to a big shunt. So while its a legit rootes works rally tiger and competed in events in period.. its early history realtes to another shell.

Anybody know why V.I.N. is missing LRX FE

My guess is because this was a car specifically built to be competitively campaigned by the factory and not intended for sale to the public.

Most of the cars we see here have LXRFE where the X stands for export. Tigers intended for the home market (England) had HRO instead of LRX. (Info from page 1 of the Sunbeam Specialities catalog)

Suffixes

Hi All

The very first Tigers did not have any suffixes. Then starting with 0021 to about 0040 the VIN only had a FE suffix (BON, p.23). My Tiger is 0033FE.

Even with the factory rebody it's a cool piece of history. Many of the early GT350's and trans am Mustangs were rebodied at some point due to their abuse but they still bring good money. This car needs the right collector to scoop it up and use it.

The car still competed under the factory after the rebody.. the VIn of the rebody is also known to several people. It is a great car.. would be very cool to own... Also i believe the LeMans Tiger mule may also be coming up for sale?

Transmission?

Hi All

I do have a question about the transmission. It was my understanding that the early Tigers (up to 0056) had BW T-10 transmissions with the short shifter. In the photos it sure looks as if this works Tiger has a Toploader.

As the last of the pre-production line cars perhaps the factory had a Toploader available for 0011...or is it not original?

Just curious...

A Valid Question fer sure. Although having watched (and done) things in the pits just to get a car back in the race, no substitution was considered sacrilege. For a chuckle, I witnessed the doors "borrowed" from a Hertz Mustang to put a Shelby 350 back in a Trans Am heat. The rental Hertz actual went back to the agency with tire rubs on the doors . . .true tale.

You have to understand that this cars VIN does not relate to when it was built the second time. The early Tigers did have the T10, but by the time the tigers were rallying in '65 season they were homologated with the top loader. Recall the Tiger that got disqualified for running a "detuned" motor when it had a valave size difference to the homologation sheets that were submitted pre-production. The car as rebuilt has a square corner body.

it is a LEGIT works rally tiger.. but did get an ID change.

Confused???

Michael

If I understand you correctly, it was not the ID number that changed but rather...the ID number (0011) remained the same but during its life as a rally Tiger it received updated components as the old ones wore out or were damaged. Do I have that right?

Jim the rally cars gained updated parts to keep them to spec as homologated and also as per what rules allowed. In the case of this car.. which was rolled IIRC they got another tiger shell and switched the ID and upgraded to rally spec. You switch ID;s to retain the cars ID papers for racing and more importantly avoid paying new registration tax on a new car/number.

Very Interesting

Michael

You learn something new everyday. I did not know that the factories actually switched the ID tag to a new shell as part of the homologation process. I guess that makes sense so you do not have to start the documentation process all over.

Funny though...if I did that the police would come knocking on my door.

A close up of the VIN shows 0014 actually... I would think a new shell is pushing the 'updated component' window... lol

I think the most often 'reshelled' cars I've ever seen are the 'old' Minis ...

Good Eyes

Thanks...a very important observation/correction. That would make this Rally Tiger the 3rd Tiger off the Jensen production line.

Is David Duncanson on board here? He could clear up all of these questions...

If I am not mistaken when you buy a "body in white" for racing there is no vin with the car--bill of sale only.
