Rare Tiger at auction

Rootes Race / Rally Car!

This is not a production Tiger as it was first manufactured.

As Mr. King said this is a Rootes Group Race car. More than one was rebodied in preparation for a coming season. It is not a tribute car built by third parties.

It is a Tiger but the value and relative worth is different and measured with different yardsticks. And attractive to different people.

In Theory .. You could buy a "Body in White"... However there is only one record of a body in white in the Jensen ledgers. That was for the "Works Tiger" FRW668C.. And that car is of great relevance to the history of my Tiger AHP294B
REBODIES?
I think you are confusing the issue... Two brand new complete Tigers were delivered to the Competition Department ..late 65..these were converted into Rally cars as per the new regs set down by the FIA. No vents. air scoops and more or less a reduction in power, via the carbs that could be used. They became FRW667C and AHP294b
ADU311B was probably re-shelled / re-bodied ..originally red it changed to blue in 1965
SHUNTS
Not aware of any shunt to 294B..nor of any Roll... It did have a Brake fire in the Alpine Rally of 65... FRW667C was destroyed by Andrew Cowan In the 66 Monte Rally and ADU311B was smashed in the Alpine rally 65 .
SALE
I entered my car into auction 3 yeas ago.. It was bid to £78,000... I was offered £80,000 by the auction house ..I turned down both offers.... silly boy!
PICTURES
Front cover of Graham Roods Book "The Works Tigers". Also a spoof add that was never used .... Happy to answer any questions...

sorry trying to get the hang of this ... keeps saying there is a error!!.. anyway the pictures I was trying to post?..

David,

Thanks for the more detailed info on your car. It is certainly a great part of rootes/sunbeam/tiger history. I wish you well for the sale and hope it finds a caring owner who will get it out and about for the public as well. Wish i was in the position to acquire it.

Must be hard to let it go. :(

Well thank you ..It will break my heart....
However as this is a Tiger site and you guys know everything, can you answer this little Question?
How did two new Rally cars , both 1965 late cross over bodies , receive two different Year Registrations... ie FRW667C (the C is 1965) and AHP294B (the B is 1964)
And here is your real tester...how did a 1966 MK1A Rally car get the Registration number FRW668C (The C is 1965)?
So who made the error ?. The Body in white I mentioned earlier becomes more significant..... It becomes FRW668C ..the last of the Rootes Rally Tigers .

So a bit of "Sherlock" is required?........ Pictures ..Two works Tigers ..one is a BIG fake...can't even get it correct!!

Cwr pic #2 wasnt just a fake rally tiger IIRC wasnt it outed as an alpine body as well?

I believe there is a theory a couple of the rally cars recieved new shells over their life (via accident damage or issues of changes to regulations that required the undoing of previous modifications)

Assume that early rego numbers appear on late body cars due to the Vin's being moved from one to another for aforementioned FIA tech papers and for taxes/duties reasons.

As previously mentioned the rally minis were notorious for this.

It is very nice to read the history on this car--I never really paid much attention to the rally cars until now. Good luck with the sale.

I have no doubt that Dave's car is the real thing and deserves an appropriate price at auction.

In the world of high end collector cars, you really don't have to have much of the "orginal car" to still get market prices at aution. Read the description of this Maserati Birdcage, #2461, and you realize that there is not much left of the car as it was built by Maserati in 1960. At auction it sold for over $2mil in 2013.

All the Best with the sale. Your post was very informative, as was this entire thread. Love the registration certificate.

Too bad the new owners won't be getting the thing-a-ma-jig, however! Thanks for clearing up the picture, David!
