Rear view mirror replacement

A question for any of you that have replaced the glass insert for the rear view mirror. How did you do it? It almost looks like I need to break the old one to get it out of the frame. Is this correct? The existing one was probably replaced long ago based on the thin layer of rtv holing it to the frame plus it's probably been glued to the frame as well. I don't want to get medieval with it if I don't have to.-Brad

Have you got the small rectangular convec mirror or the later oval one? Does it still have the plastic edge surround?

I have an article step by step i can probably post here

I have the oval mirror. It has some odd looking textured tape around the periphery plus some RTV looking stuff which leads me to believe that it has been replaced before. It almost appears glued in with the RTV covering the edges

I soaked mine in mineral spirits overnight. That pretty much dissolves the rtv.

Good thought. And it doesn't harm the plastic or the goofy looking tape that surrounds the edges? I guess I shouldn't call it goofy, it matches the texture of the back of the mirror. - Brad

One of our ancient gray-labor Guru's used a hair dryer on mine and "worried" it off in slow but safe fashion . . . .

Also interested in how to wrestle off the mirror back off of the ball socket. It was one of those I'm putting this down before I bust it.

Exactly. I'm concerned as well about breaking something then wishing I would have just left it alone. Mine has areas of the silvering that has been attacked, probably by the glue that was used to attach it to the frame.
