suspension issue?

Any suggestions as to why my front shocks are making contact with the spring or upper spring perch? I am replacing the motor and while the cross member is out I figured I would replace the ball joints. When removing the shocks, both of them are wearing the paint off by making contact with I'm guess the spring. The springs are 20+ years old but the shocks are recently rebuilt. Now wondering if some additional work is needed on the crossmember.

This is a common problem when using Koni shocks. They are much bigger in diameter that the originals. They are rubbing on the rubber packing between the spring and the crossmember. I have a pair I just removed from my MK2 that look the same. I went to a gas filled shock I bought from Napa. They are slightly smaller diameter and do not rub.
