Tiger owner Jerry Christopherson has posted a very nice video describing the theory and operation of the Tiger's brake booster. He then gives a great How-To on rebuilding your own booster. In total it runs one hour.

He shared a fact I'd never heard: He said the overhaul manual says that the booster's seals should be replaced every 3 years!

Having done more than 300 hundred of the little critters over the decades, I can say that certain of the seals do suffer "lip" failures within a few seasons. Factors include mixing incompatible fluids, sitting in storage and dirty/rusty fluids. Flushing the system whenever the fluid looks dark & murky (don't be lazy) is a good way to prolong performance. Once you find fluids in the vacuum hose connection, it's too late.

I have 2 in storage, probably the best place for them........I have had so many Tigers without the servo I don't know any better, it stops just fine as is.

Great post

I too have two in the pile waiting a rebuild. One of the things my P.O. has done was to install a Lockheed I think from Victoria British. As I lurk around my car at events, I have overheard a bunch of Brit car guys say , wrong one but at least they work.

Indeed it does as when the car with a wired open manual choke carby stalls on the way down my big hill I'm glad the seat is not fully reclined so I can do the leg press as I coast down in El Cheapo overdrive, I mean neutral.

Call me a wuss but I prefer a drive not a work out, or else I would also practice parking the car.

Love good brakes!!

Michael Eisenberg at Meaco Motorsports, near Torrance I believe, maintained the brakes for years on 982. They work flawlessly with very little pressure and only about 1 inch movement till all four are locked down. Like all quality work bring the check book, wide open. Most work was done over 3 years ago, so according to the video, it may be my time to see just what it's like to have a VERY poor man's Cobra!

I've never driven an Alpine or Tiger that stoped as nice, or had as good of brake feel without the booster, as those that do. I have always rebuilt mine. Plus, I just likes the looks of them under the bonet.

:)
