Tiger Door Hinge Pin Replacement

I guess all things droop over time....

Trying to get my doors back in alignment and it appears my door hinge pins are worn to the point that they need to be replaced. Are there any sources for replacements or just replace with drill rod as Rick at SS suggests? Is there info on length and dia?

Almost got this thing together and debugged but I guess no projects are ever complete. Really appreciate the membership and all the help over the past couple of years.
 
I had this done on my Hillman Husky and it worked great. They re-drilled and pressed in a new pin. 10 years later it's still working great and is in perfect alignment.
 
Thanks--that's the direction I'm going, coupled with replacement strikers w/o signs of grooving. Should be good.
 
Contacted the UK sunbeam parts source and they are out of stock. Anyone know the dia. and length of these hinge pins? Want to machine a set and have them on hand--then press the pins out/replace one at a time. Maybe even design a bushing set to fit.

Gee; if you get good at it, I'll send you a dozen or so for re-hab . . . . .no bull.;)
 
I have a complete new set out in the shop that came with a parts lot from another Tiger owner... Seems to me there are 3 for each side as I think the 'long' hinge takes two short ones. I can take a couple pics and send you the dimensions... PM me your email and I'll get back to you in the next day or so...

Well... I went out and found them a little faster than I thought...so... I'm putting up a pic and info here !
The bags have NO labels so I can only assume these are what I bought them to be... and don't know the original source :rolleyes:
In each kit there are several brass washers about.037" thick... and 2 (roll, split or whatever you might call them) pins about 2" long and one about 2.5" They measure about .318" to .322" so I will assume that the hinges are drilled 5/16" ( .3125" )
They don't look too exotic so I imagine a local jobber store should have them in stock ! :cool:

Thanks Jim. I know that once I get mine out their are a number of mfgs of replacement door hinge pins and some might cross over--maybe. I don't know that this would be a great application for a coiled retainer.

Very timely and my problem of the morning!
I rebuilt the hinges on my Beetle earlier this year and a full on machine shop job.

A link to the TEAE article would be greatly appreciated as well as a source for hinge pin kits
 
I saw that in the UK and have asked Stuart

I also have been doing a bit of homework:
The hinge likely will have to go to a milling machine to bore for new pin, so once set up one could bore for an Oilite bushing

Then it is a simple matter to use tool steel rod for the pin. Fastnal have .3215" OD rod to ASTM A681

Bush id is .3125 +/- zero
Shaft OD is .3125 +/- .0005"
So easy enough to fit pin into the Oilite bearing and have a zero slop hinge, with a replaceable bushing

Not sure if a thrust washer is needed between hinge halves. I cannot find an appropriate flanged Oilite bushing
Jim notes above that the washers he has are .037 thick. - seems pretty thin is this correct??

Also as the drill rod pin is not splined at the top to prevent working its way out, one might need a set screw to retain the pin??

Maybe a hybrid for best of both worlds? Splined pins from Sunbeam Spares in the UK, and an Oilite bush
Sunbeam Spares lists pin OD as 8mm - close to 5/16 but not close enough for a bearing I have asked Stuart to confirm the exact OD of his pins in order to choose an appropriate metric Oilite bushing

Can someone please measure the hinge body where a bushing would go, and if all the same length
Is it 1"/25mm?

My car is being painted so I only have access to one spare hinge, it is the smaller wedge shaped one. Those lengths are all less than 1". On the side with two ears they are .950". On the side with three, the outer ones are .750" and the inner is .700". All dimensions are close but not dead on because I measured with the pin in place. There do appear to be thrust washers in between and they look to be around .060".

Thanks for the help, as I am trying to re-design this from halfway around the world from my car.
I should be able to find bushes to fit should I decide to go that route, but the situation has changed....

Stuart at Sunbeam Spares UK, tells me that he is making all new hinges now with Oilite bushings and thrust washers for "about 300 GBP per car. Rather than re-invent the wheel using Canadian machine shop rates, I am going to wait and see what he comes up with then decide.
