tiger inflation

inflation

it's kinda like the suburban I looked at last week. 74K sticker price. even though I buy at dealer cost less all the holdbacks, etc it was still more than I wanted to pay. someone will buy it and the dealer may make 3 or 4K selling it. the same goes for these guys. they'll post an asking price for the tiger but they also know what they need out of the car. that could be a lot less than the posted price. someone will come along that has no clue about tiger web sites or the opinions of some owners and will buy the car giving the seller a fair profit. that why there are a lot of rich car dealers.

From the dealer text:

"This Mk IA Tiger was manufactured on May 13, 1966 and built to North American specifications. Recently this Tiger Roadster was treated to a no expenses spare restoration to its current exceptional show/concours standard, the cost of which has far exceeded this Tiger’s asking price. No stone was left unturned, the outcome being a Tiger Roadster MKI A that is superb in absolutely every respect.

This Sunbeam Tiger Roadster MK I A is complete with its tool roll, owner’s manual and certificate from the Rootes Archive Centre Trust to acknowledge its authenticity. A wonderful car to show or drive and certainly a welcome addition/invest to any collection that is sure to appreciate with little chance of depreciation if kept in its similar condition."

We all know the car is far from concourse, far from show and was not the subject of a full restoration let alone one more than its current asking price that's 3 times its actual value. This car has been tarted up 2 times in the last 18 months before being sold, I wonder if any true buyer/owner has considered it or just flippers.

I note in the background in one if their other ads they appear to have the red early series alpine from eBay last year via another dealer... Wonder what the asking price on.that is..

History...

You have to wonder if the recent auction results for tigers are a farce when you see this:

Can a dealer really buy this car for probably 60k more than it was worth snd then try snd make another 50k?

The sale of that car a mere 2 weeks ago was discussed here...
http://catmbr.org/VB_forum/showthread.php?t=4027

I posted a sale from about 2 years ago on that thread...

Car sold for about $53K. Buyer paid total of $58K. Seller got about $48k

It looked like very little was done to upgrade the car between auctions other than 'steelies' and more crooked moldings... maybe a little detail work...

2 weeks ago, same car sold for $125K . Buyer paid a total of $137500 . Seller got $112500 . Profit in the neighborhood of $54500 less upgrades cost !!

Now... car is for sale for a BIN of $167500 ! That's about $30k more than they paid for it 2 weeks ago. I doubt they've had time to do any upgrades and noticed that they avoided any close-ups of the paint as in the RM auction :(

So... pretty hard to top that RM sale for gross profit but then again, they had to store it for a whole 2 years... :p

My guess... someone ( newbie?! ) will offer $20k under the BIN and when they shake hands on it, they will both be smiling ... one of them will continue to smile... one won't !

For $167 K , I think I would have to think long and hard on that one . I least my money spent NOT on this Tiger mind you . Plus ...... for $167K , I can buy a nice beach lot to enjoy , and appreciate in value probably at the same rate , if not better !
So ..... are Tiger's rate of value exceed the Real Estate market ? Maybe so , but I don't see the value in this one ( crooked mounted side trim , NO close-ups this time { hummmm wonder why } ) .

Is the wood above the oil gauge wrinkled? And the door panel sure looks like a lame job for how talked up this car is, and especially the price. The pleats in the drivers seat aren't even either, towards the front where it's kinda loose looking. I it's prob a kit, and the kits are pretty nice, but I worked at an upholstery shop for a while and my old boss wouldn't even let a cheap job roll out if it had screws showing or uneven seams. Still way nicer than my car though, and it's a real Tiger... Lol

TAC?

and it's a real Tiger... Lol

Maybe I missed it, but I did not see where the car had gone through a TAC inspection. The archive authenticity listed, as I understand it, only means that the numbers on the tranny and rear end match the serial number on the VIN plate and the JAL tag. It could still be an Alpine with the engine, tranny, VIN plate and JAL moved to a different car. I am NOT saying this is not a real Tiger, only that a potential buyer should look for a TAC sticker before laying out the money for a real Tiger.

This car is average, as mentioned cheap and not good quality repaint, holes drilled atvwting angle in door do side trim goes up at an angle, trim next to tiger scripts in wrong spot, questionable interior, delaminated dash... We Havent even seen the underside.

The car is a 40k car mid 40's at best.... This is speculation in the market at its worst. The dealer would know the car did not receive a rotisserie restoration and claiming so should leave them open to avenues of false advertising or knowingly deceiving.

tiger

the only person that has to be happy is the buyer. those of you who get out and travel around to shows and events have seen many less than perfect cars but a lot of happy owners. I've also seen many cars that improve as the years go on. that's why there are awards for " diamond in the rough ".
