Does anyone have any suggestions for painting shop for a Tiger in or near California Central Coast area? Will need some bodywork (no rust repair needed). I recently joined the forum - my first post. Thanks for any reply.

Between Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo there must be at least one suitable shop that has experience working on old British cars. I would suggest you get in touch with these guys for their suggestions :

XKE Unlimited
850 Fiero Lane
San Luis Obispo 805-544-7864

They don't work on Tigers but I have seen many of their restorations and they are first class so they must know who's good in your area.

Is that too far? JB66CAT on the forum here had one done there. If you look him under the community tab you could ask him. I think he also had suggested a Jag guy also.

Opps.. they are under new management but still at the same address see link:

They are inline cost wise for the quality of the work they do. You can probably
fined someone cheaper it all depends on what your criteria is and the type of body work you will need.

It might be helpful to post some pictures of your Tiger so we can make useful suggestions as many of us have been down this road..

I don’t have any experience with Chris Richards but I think he’s in that general area. He does know Tigers and has done some work for people on this site, maybe they can chime in.

Good luck, I would suggest that whomever you get the work done you ask upfront for a timeframe for completion and possible costs. Ask me why I say this.

It's a noble idea but as you know once you start tearing into one of these cars
the hiding issues come front and center. It's not uncommon for a paint job to go a year or more and cost twice/ thrice what you might think it would cost. Gone are the Earl Schieb $ 69.95 two day paint jobs.

Showing My Age

I remember when Earl Schieb said "I'll paint any car any color for only nineteen ninety-five!" And he meant $19.95. A friend of my older brother has his car painted at one of Earl's shop. All the trim on the car got painted, as did the hubcaps and parts of the tires and bumpers.

That is exactly why I put it out there, most people start these projects and think that it'll be 6mo-to a year and cost 20K and in reality it becomes 2-3 years and 80k.

My short term memory is weak, but I don't remember an Earl Schieb price lower than $29.95

...And THAT was a LONG time ago.

BUT, last time I was down the 91 FWY in the Lakewood area, there was Still an Earl Schieb car painter.

Then there is this...

It looks like around 1962

I moved to CA in 1963....

Earl Schibe to Maaco

Maaco franchise paint shops is the new Earl Schibe. A freind of mine had a 03 f150 painted by them for $500 last year after he did the body work. Earl's phrase was in by 9 out by 5 for $29.95 as I remember from Chicago TV commercial.

Cabin fever

Earl and Macco do the Jitterbug, no not the dance the sanding with 80 grit. That said a pal has had several 10' paint jobs done on his production VW bus resto mill.

To be fair to our OG poster he did not say what level of job he wants.

On a trip to a United the *&^% CA DOT had ground down 5 miles of I 5 turning it into a gravel road. My point here is Trailer queen or driver anything on the road with sticky tires or multi season ones is going to get hammered if only by the nature and the Tiger's wheelbase. Have you ever been driving with a pal or close to an old car the crams on it's brakes when approaching water in the road? So I'm back to the question driver level Pismo Beach or Pebble Beach paint job? painted engine bay boot, or doorjambs out and motor in . To those wanting to see a Macco job how about the BaT MG color green car, probably 1000 dollars to put it on 2500 to take it off ...

There is a shop in Lompoc, CA that did all the work on my 66. They do outstanding paint and body work. Don't let the name fool you. They've done Jags and such and a Hispano-Suiza that was shown at Pebble Beach.
