these auctions are just another version of a used car lot and the auctioneer is a used car salesman doing his job quite well.. I wonder if they use the car fax for info. probably not.
 
Auction madness

I've gone to a number of the auctions and am always amazed by the fact that many buyers seem to lose all sense of judgement and frequently pay WAY more than the car is "worth", i.e., what it would sell for elsewhere in a private transaction between a willing buyer and a willing seller. I frequently want to scream "don't you people ever look at eBay!" during the auction bidding (and even at that I'm sure some of the eBay prices are jacked up by shills).
So, I guess the lesson is, if you want to BUY a Tiger, buy one from a private party, if you want to SELL one, send it to the auction!
 
So, which way do you buy a Tiger

I wasn't aware a Car Fax could be ordered on so old of a car but there are ways to validate a Tiger purchase. I was fortunate to have Norm Miller compare notes on the tiger and Maeco Motorsports had the maintainence records for 12yrs. The car had records in the B of N. and had recently been TAC d. CAT club members have helped since day 1 on corrective actions as well as the parts.(thanks again, Jim) Tigers can be bought with prudence or on a whim. Who's to say whom will enjoy their purchase the most. I'm still hoping for the day my prayers will be answered for a VBD Certificate of Disclosure. maybe god is listening...

He has a numbers matching valve cover. :D The overwhelming majority of the collector cars have restored tags. You would see a lot more if it was cost effective to reproduce them with the original silkscreen.

Now about, the lack of the TAC Triangle ,the exhaust pass thru's ...etc.

I don't know about that one. Wayne Carrini of Chasing Classic Cars had a car at auction, I believe it was a Bonhams run auction, and the auction was stopped because the DMV showed up and didn't allow a number of cars to be auctioned because they had repro VIN tags.

you can buy new blank vin tags for tigers and alpines. there are also replacement rub offs for the lettering on the vin tags.
 
I know the last numbers of the VIN and JAL seldom, if ever, match. I seem to recall talking to Norm Miller some years ago about that. I think he told me the bodies were delivered to Jensen and they pulled them out of inventory for production in a rather random sequence. Does the 27 difference in the numbers here seem unusual to anyone?

Mine is 17 and I recall Norm thinking that was a bit at the extreme.

What I was commenting on is the huge number of domestic cars that have them, their huge availability on the internet complete with darn near any style of rivet you could possibly want. Look at Moss motors selling lots of data plates, MG MINI MOKE etc. If you'd like to focus on a TV show and a single event that's fine. I like the idea of the DMV's riveting and gluing their own non removable tag. Most have read the stories of big time car builders creating cars and getting arrested. More cars are being cloned than ever before How many cars were totaled by insurance companies in the past, never had their titles marked SALVAGE and sold on to unsuspecting buyers. It is time DMV's got their collective act's together

If you haven't read the re shelling thread on U.K. Tiger site or read some of the heated Shelby discussions regarding which number belongs to which car. My personal favorite is the Geronimo's axe story. There is also a huge question of legality and intent of the restorer which varies state to state and country to country. One can only imagine the angst of our possible fantasy member when he went thru the gov't wringer all because some restorer removed his vin tag.

We started at , why did someone pay 96,000 dollars for car with a debatable market value of 50 ish? because a auction sales editor stated the car is listed in the registry or because he had more money then good sense?

Possibly a grassy knoll explanation in there somewhere,

I remember one car (Terry Taylor?) that is about 1000 numbers off- the range is pretty staggering!
