Tiger spare wheel

Is there a documented case of an original wheel - Tiger or Alpine - failing?

I've driven quite a few road miles in a Tiger running Alpine factory steel wheels, didn't know the difference from a Tiger wheel, and no problem.

I've seen Alpines auto crossed with factory steel wheels as well - no way to know if they were Tiger or Alpine wheels, but saw no problem..

I wonder if it's safe to assume that one can auto cross a Tiger on factory steel wheels, either Tiger or Alpine wheels?

Long time Tiger owners like Tom McDaniel, report that there were enough failures back in the day to cause the banning of stock Tiger wheels from SCCA autocrosses.

The factory have in the owners manual specifically not to use the road wheels for racing.

There were several cases in the UK in period where the tigers would pull the center out of the hub around the lug nuts. in the 1990's when they were running tigers in the historic road prep class there were a couple of tigers that suffered this outcome ... made for some interesting and somewhat scary photos for the UK magazines.
