Timing change

Ok, I've been fighting a no start of my rebuilt engine. The local machine shop did the machining and supplied some parts through their supplies. I assembled the engine and looked forward to starting it up. It won't start, and in another thread I got enough info to ensure I've got the right TDC and timing. So I went back and looked at the engine components. The shop supplied early 289 heads with the larger valves and an early 302 crankshaft/rods to stroke it a bit. I discovered (or looked for the first time) that the camshaft is for a newer 302/351 with a firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Can I reorder the distributor cap for this order or does it also have to match the crankshaft, in which I need to replace the cam? Sigh.

Tom,

The cam determines the firing order of the cylinders. So no need to do anything except plug in the ignition wires in accordance with the firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 ( All caps are the same) set the initial advance and it should start right up.

I like Sandy's schematic

which is also concurring with Bill D's response for spark plug loom wiring.

NOTE: And sorry to be one of THOSE guys, but... the firing order... well, it kind of matters if you're trying to keep the nostalgia. At least one cam maker does stroker 302 (or more) with the old firing orders too. Lunati?

Thanks for the replies. I'm surprised that the positions of the pistons (or crankshaft) don't matter. I guess that once you align cylinder 1 with TDC and the distributor everything else just follows.

Most cam makers do make custom cams with the 289 firing order. I have a stage 4 cam with a 289 firing order in my 302 that was custom made by Crower.

Thanks all for your help. I swapped distributors and it fired up. 1st time since it was taken off the road sometime around 1989!
