valve covers

wow--between these valve covers, the air cleaner and misc items my car must be worth at least $100k......:D

If you look at the bottom of the listing:

( dont bother bidding - they are gone )

they have probably jumped the price very high to stop people bidding as they have sold them outside of ebay.

If they sold, the seller should just end the auction early. Ebay allows that now, in cases where the item is for sale locally. I've done it many times, and specified as such in the auction description. BTW, everyone knows these can be purchased from SS new for $285, right?

Auction Terms on EPay

May be cancelled at anytime before the last 12 hours. As I read it the auction is an invitation for bids until that time.
Too bad for us buyers and sellers that many programs and servers will bid automatically for you in the last minute for a fee, probably owned by Epay too.

Impossible to tell what is shill or what is a controlled bid by a seller willing to pay final value fees himself if he ends up having his shill bid the item up.

Why else would a cast Aluminium Tiger air cleaner sell for 610 plus 30 shipping unless it is a Christmas gift for the Tiger owner who really has everything. The last few have sold for about 400

In case you want one to match the LAT cast valve covers. I want one too but not enough to pay 610 for it plus shipping.

Recently I snagged a pressed steel original air cleaner for 700 bucks on e bay as a buy it now.

Possibly you saw the drilled, notched welded one original one that sold for over 500 too.

At the last Fix in swap meet a member showed with several fiberglass repops of the stock air cleaner. Clearly a lower cost alternative. Last year one of the clubs oldest members was hawking the mold for them

I thought he would be hawking them on forum by now.

Im surprised that no one has repro'd the original air cleaners.

Admittedly the initial costs would be high but there is certainly a market for them.
Sell them at $200 and you wouldn't be able to make them quick enough.
Those with "real" ones would probably buy one at that price and mothball the original.

Supply and Demand

The reason the housings are so expensive is that there a lot more folks looking to buy one than are selling one. If someone were to remanufacture them, that person would be better off not announcing it, but put them on eBay one at a time, spread out. The first one would sell for a goob of money, the next one about the same, and so forth until the market starts to get saturated and the price drops. Then there would be a new market - folks who weren't really trying to get one, but the price becomes low enough that they would buy one. It's all about supply and demand. Like Duke, I don't think the total market would be enough to support the tooling and marketing costs.

By the way, do you think AC might have something to say if someone were to start manufacturing new parts with their name on it? Didn't a reputable supplier of Sunbeam parts run into a similar issue with Lucas and tail light lenses?

Then you will still have the original vs. the remake. People will be will to pay more for the real deal over the repro and that would also take away from the remake market.

Original Vs Fake

A day to day discussion in the Lap of Luxury that is So. Cal.

The Fiberglass ones look the same till you tap them, even showing the cast in number on the rear edge. Which is more than I can say for some plastic things I saw today in Redondo Beach.

I doubt AC would slap a cease and desist order on the hobby seller.

If you did the Filter housings properly you would not be able to know if the were repro or original, they are a tin pressing and if you made the right dies you would get an accurate part.

If we are trying to make original spec parts, i would love to for SS or CS to apply the correct texture to the molded heater hoses, that would make those parts just that bit better and factory correct.

I'd buy one. I just bought a pair of LAT8 VC's, and it would match nicely.

I'd pick up a repro'd "TIGER" oil pan, too, if they existed at a similar price point. You wouldn't believe what I'm going through to repair a damaged "COBRA" one I picked up at a swap meet.

Not the oil pan, I would not touch one with anyone's money. Due to its construction, it is brittle and would break easily if hit. There is no baffling inside the pan and thus no way to keep the oil around the pick up while throwing the car around.

A steel pan is perfect as it has the baffling to keep the oil around the pickup and will only dent if hit.

"By the way, do you think AC might have something to say if someone were to start manufacturing new parts with their name on it?"

A long time ago, someone was talking about making a fiberglass duplicate. The problem was the new one wasn't going to include the AC logo and lettering because of possible license issues. The overall response was no AC logo then why buy it?

You may be able to get away with making one for private sale that includes the AC lettering but selling one by web site or catalog may get you a call from AC's lawyer.
