Vin Plates

Very easy to make the ally tag.. and Paul B used to sell silk screenings of the lettering.. but stamping it correctly and then getting the right rivets is a more challenging pursuit.

Lettraset

Paul B's are static cling that you have to clear coat over.
Moss Motors et al have been selling data plates for years. Chevy and other common plates have been around for a long time.Specialty rivets are also available for the common and popular cars as well. This guy's plates seem to be a printed ink or paint based product. I have seen some in real life. Two years ago he had the same plate offered without the Coventry, England on them. The plates offered then had another city and country on them. It's too bad the picture in the Wooden Nickels section of the BON is so grainy as the picture and accompanying story would suggest its not the first go around for these reproductions or very similar ones to be sure. In the posts on forum there were a few auction cars that had the same style tag with machine engraved trophy shop numbering. This CAT got out of the bag a long time ago for whatever reason and maybe one as simple as a restorer replacing a accidentally damaged one and not the nefarious wooden nickle clone as Norm wrote about. So maybe the Rootes employees were drinking on the job just like the recent story of Chrysler employees, that could be the best explanation of the sloppy stamped original tags. Google the topic or keyword search its interesting reading to be sure.

So just how big a payment is that, big boy

28 bucks plus 13.50 in shipping, rounded. Miss the old prep school in London, used to know the whole pounds, shilling and pence routine, all decimal nowadays.

looking for rivets

Can anyone direct me to a source of ID plate rivets? Doug Jennings dipped my Tiger and thus the plates were removed so they would survive. Following paint it's finally time to reattach them.

...tom

Measured my MKII rivets:

Head Dia. .225"
Head Hgt. .025"
Mandrel Dia .075"

Looks like a Pop Emhart Rivet would be close..

3mm dia
Head Dia .224-.248
Head Hgt .043
Mandrel dia .072

or Rivquick
3mm
Head dia .236
head hgt .033
Mandrel dia ???

A minute on the lathe could make them exact size.....

Tom,

I would assume Doug would know where to get appropriate rivets. Remember they are different between the early MKI's and the later cars

I helped a friend restore his Tiger in the 80's--he used rivets from OSH and they passed as original on his TAC.

Urban Myth

Or old wife's Tiger Tales? maybe we should start a new thread. Yes I have heard the "I've got some NOS rivets in a tool box or drawer somewhere," more than one time. I bet Mrs. Cobrakidz does have some tales of her old car not to say she is old tho:)

the rivets used on sunbeams is a " blind rivet" . the rivet is not the typical rivet available at most big box stores all over the world. the rivet does not have the stud sticking thru the bottom and it spreads the rivet out as you pull the stud thru. the blind rivet has a closed bottom with the stud inside and as you pull it thru and out of the rivet it also spreads and secures whatever you working on. the difference is that with the blind rivet you no longer have an open hole for water to run thru. that means water does not enter the bulkhead thru the blind rivet and lessens the risk of rust. is that why rootes used them?? another thing to consider is the difference between the rivet guns made years ago versus the ones made today. older guns did not have a flat surface on the changeable head as todays guns do. older guns had a head with a conical shape which allows the rivet head to be pulled up and leaves a circular mark on the rivet. I have been to meets over the years where rivets were being sold. the seller had boxes of them. blind rivets should be available at most industrial supply houses. I also have run across these rivets at the Carlisle import swap meet.

By blind rivet, do you mean a sealed rivet? Wikipedia says POP rivets is just another name for a blind rivet, blind meaning you don't see the end stuck into whatever is being joined. POP is actually a brand.
Some pictures of original Tiger rivets show part of the mandrel in place and some other pictures looks like it is missing. If the hole left is to remain sealed, the tail end would have to be solid with the mandrel not protruding through the end.

a blind rivet does not have the stud with the ball shaped end sticking thru the rivet like the commonly referred to POP rivet available at every hardware, parts store and walmart. a blind rivet does not have an opening on the end so you will find the stud is inside the tube of the rivet. water can not run thru the rivet. there are many sites on the internet where you can order these rivets. most sites have many different sizes, styles and aluminum or steel. they also sell the guns to install them. one site has boxes of them that have up to 9000 rivets in the box.

Just about any rivet that attaches from one side only is considered a 'blind' rivet and the most common DO have a stud with a ball shaped end sticking through the rivet and that's what you'll find at pretty much any store that carries rivets !!

I think what you are referring to is what they call a "closed end" blind rivet like this...
